"But there is no match for beating another real human opponent. Beating the CPU doesn't have the same feel or worth."
After twenty+ years of shooters I can definitely say that I know what you mean. But I respectfully disagree. I hadn't played my second match of Halo 2 team slayer when I started asking myself the questions that I still ask today and that have ultimately ruined multiplayer gaming for me, and I suspect are beginning to ruin it for a lot of people.
"What did that guy just do that I wasn't doing to him, and yet I'm on the ground and he just waltzes away?"
"What kind of desperation caused matchmaking to put me and ____ in the same game together?"
"Why is every shooter designed with the kind of skill gap that actively encourages cheaters and says to the casual weekend gamer, 'Hey buddy, just run around for a while, the pros'll be along to deal with you soon enough.'"
The list goes on and on. The real point is this: when you say that beating a computer will never be as compelling as beating another person, I call that a lack of faith on your part, though an understandable one. Developers SHOULD currently be engaged in an arms race to develop the AI enemy that is indistinguishable from a real person. Why is this not the NEXT BIG THING in shooters? It should be. I'll say it here right now: the company that does this will be the next giant in gaming, gaming's version of Apple or Amazon. And I'm just some schlub playing games after work. If I can see this why can't they? Why aren't they doing something about it? Halo Infinite was supposed to be a huge step forward with AI, and it WAS a step forward though hardly a huge step.
We wait for the sunrise.
@reconzero Certainly. GTA 6 trailer is coming out today and its one of those so anticipated games that if they come up with something completely new it will certain turn the whole gaming industry trend towards something else. Also nothing beats a good single player story (GTAs, Witcher 3, some of the Assassins Creed games, RDRs etc).
I think the PvP element related dopamine addiction is a thing with the younger generation. So much and immediately. I like to take my doses in smaller batches and find that feeling of success in smaller things like hitting a good shot or finding a great angle for particular situation. If the games are not going my way today I play something else and try again tomorrow. Other end of the player spectrum you see these people coming here to complain how they are feeling miserable for not yet securing a 20 bomb in the past 2 weeks even though they grind 6 hours a day. And therefore they think MM is a problem or cheater problem is out of hand (not saying it isnt but you get the point).
Also besides good AI I think variety is the solution. Mixtape offers some but not enough since its still PvP. When I dont feel like having a shootout in RDR2 I go hunting or treasure hunting etc.

Lets get some more campaigns and single player games at this point. Bring back the PvE era.
Its all I have left as an old guy.

PC players are leaving, thats a fact, and my bet is : its mostly MnK Players.
Adding Cross Progression without an OptOut for Crossplay based on Inputtype isnt a good idea, and now they slowly pay the price.
Honest Controller Players dont like to play MnK Opponents bcs of the Movement Advantage, and honest MnK players dont like to play against assisted Aiming.
Also the Matchmaking not working as advertised make people leave, Players are fed up getting low level bots as mates when they got promised the skillgap wont be that large anymore. I predict the average number will be down to 120K until Christmas, "The Finals" will start in a couple of Days, and troves of MnK Players will just move on.

@r1ggedgame I think you are right on this one. I might even go one deeper that its purposefully done 4D brain move to weed drive the bitching and black cloud MnK players out for a nice enviroment for console kids. As a EA/Respawn business manager thats how I would explain it to the board to gain best profit.
Out of my sons school/footie friends none play on MnK. Yet everyone plays games. For example my son got over 100€ worth of gift cards for Xbox store from his buddies on his birthday.
50% was spent on some new game (Fifa or something) and 50% went on Fortnite V-bucks...

Epic Games just comes here for ideas or what?
You guys seen the new Lego Fortnite collab? Basically PvE variety in a BR shooter.
Apex dont really stand a chance.
PS. It doesnt matter if you are not interested in Lego or Fortnite. Its the kids who spend the money on the game who EA/Respawn should target for Apex to stay alive.Once the money stops they will just pull the plug. Big company business.
At the moment twitch viewers Fortnite 240K vs Apex 42K...
