Ladder Point Design Ruined Ranked

Season 17 brought a lot of great changes; it was almost a perfect update -- except for one little design decision, which happened to ruin the entire game: Ladder points.

They are clearly called "ladder points" because they are positive sum, so people will continue to climb higher and higher. I presume this decision was made so that people don't feel stuck at a rank and lose interest in the game.

Unfortunately, the consequence was to completely devalue tiers. Almost everyone is master now; being silver or gold or diamond or master doesn't mean anything anymore because people have positive expected gain over time, and even becoming or staying a predator requires, first and foremost, playing a lot of games regardless of skill.

The point of playing ranked is, surprisingly, to rank players. The rank is supposed to represent a comparative skill level, and you gain points to demonstrate that you are better at playing the game. It's absolutely backwards to hide the skill-based rank and instead give everyone a "rank" that mostly indicates number of games played. It completely destroys any motivation to play the game, let alone to play it seriously with the intention to win.

Maybe "ladder points" work overall; maybe most people fall for the feeling of progress. I don't know. But for me and the people I know, there is no longer any reason to play this game.

@xx1101011xx ranked is the new pubs.

Not to differ. However, I remember so called "Pros" complaining that matches were "too sweaty".
Now they complain that it's too easy.
As you can imagine, when a player can reach a higher rank than s/he deserves....

Perhaps it would just be better to get away with ranked at all? Then I bet it'll be too casual, and ranked will be asked once again.

I understand there are shortcomings. But in the end, those who can will play in a whole different environment, other than pubs and ranked. There is no tangible difference in the fun a Pred would have as compared to a Rookie.
The pred will be crushed by a 3 stack ALGS team, the rookie by the Pred. Same situation in my mind.

@Vdstrk I played this game because of ranked, because it had a goal that was possible but difficult and was based on quality, not sheer quantity, of games played. No, doing away with ranked would absolutely not solve this.

  • @xx1101011xx  Ranked shouldn't be eliminated.  BR as a format is actually designed more for competitive play than almost any other FPS mode I can think of.  For those that want to compete like it is a sport, have at it.

Reworking ranked does seems pretty simple to me. Your buy in costs scale with your rank (costs more per match at higher levels), base points for kills (scaled based on relative rank of the enemy you kill like previously) & assists, fixed reward &/or multiplier to kill/assist points based on how you finish. Rat and win and you get a few points, decimate the lobby and win and you get a ton of points, get rolled immediately on drop & you lose some points. Allowing people to lose points means you have to have loss forgiveness &/or demotion in the system.  You could even adjust kill/assist points (awarding a fixed round "bonus" or adjusting by %) based on round to incentivize people to take fights earlier.  What if kills in Round 1 were worth more than in Round 2, for example?  What if you could get a Kill Streak bonus for a certain amount of kills in a given time period for you &/or your squad?  Would you be less prone to rat it out or would you be more aggressive?

In that system, you just adjust the point values and multipliers until you get the balance of play you are looking for.  IMO, there are a lot of ways to address it that Respawn hasn't tried yet.

I think what people are discovering this season is that ranks mean whatever some arbitrary multiplayer lead says they mean. One season it's one thing, the next it's something else. The only reason last season's preds are butt hurt is because someone decided that it makes good business sense to give people a sense of accomplishment, false or otherwise. In the end there are probably a lot more "new" preds who are "enjoying" their experience, far outweighing the smaller number of older preds who feel cheated. Cheated because their FREE game is discounting the rank they maybe got carried to, maybe used an aimbot to achieve, [edited]. People take ranks too seriously. Take the game seriously? Sure. Ranks? I don't think so. Not this season, not ever.

CM - edited the part that could breake our rules.

  • I'm not a great player. But I made platinum this time. First time ever. In past seasons I felt I could steadily climb ranks just by surviving into late game stages. But then the split happened after I made Gold and I was always knocked back down to start over. That infuriated me. I was GOLD and earned it, so why knock me back down? I can see people quitting because of being arbitrarily knocked down to start over. I suspect at the higher ranks, the system knows who the great players are and who the ratters are, and all those in between. I'm a tweenie. I don't rat, I fight when I can, but I don't win much. I encounter lots of teams in which all three players are great. Most of them in fact. But I'm on plenty of plat teams where my two mates are WAY ABOVE ME. I still find ways of helping out though. Last night we won a great match that got me my highest scores ever. I was on fire and on target! I died at the very end, but my sacrifice helped my team win, and I don't think they knew that. Sometimes us bad players often get in just enough hits to ensure a better teammate will win a crucial fight. For example. Or maybe bad players like me did some rear guard action while our two great mates were blasting away at a third team at the front. They'd probably be better off with a better player than me, but Apex Legends (and everyone who plays) is better off overall that bad players like me don't quit.

@Frosty20203 it's my impression that our opponents are generally of a near similar level, above and below, to ourselves up until mid diamond this season. That's much fairer than its been up to now, giving us as fair crack at it 😃

For eg, premade stacked masters and preds in plat V isn't very fair imo.

  • I completely understand your frustration with the recent update and the introduction of ladder points. It appears that the implementation has unintentionally devalued the different tiers and ranks within the game, shifting the focus* from skill to the number of games played. This change has negatively impacted your motivation and enjoyment of the game, as well as others you know. I empathize with your concerns and hope that the developers take them into consideration for future updates.
