You know what, I don't even see them anymore, and forgot they were there. They were as you may know to address the hit registration issues, I tend to focus on the target not my crosshair/box though.
May I ask why you find it distracting? Can you not just take it as an "I hit" marker and ignore it or do you look at the hit pattern or something?
I don't see having an option to disable them be a problem though.

Usually if you try to track an enemy you try to keep them inside your crosshair as best as possible. These shotgun hit indicators sometimes distract or even block your vision making it harder to read enemy movement which sometimes leads to missing some shots

I'm going to agree with this post. The damage numbers are plenty sufficient. Anyone with game knowledge can tell how many pellets they hit by the damage counter. Allowing a player to toggle this would be in line with other game settings available. That said, I don't really have much issue with it, myself.
