I've gotten three t4 legendary gear without looting a single deathbox. nevermind t3 lmao. especially with lifeline. I think you were lied to.
You will actually find more gear looting houses then crowd of people that ran after each other with nothing. You are more likely to find the good gear on deathboxes later in match.

Personally, I like to wait until two squads are done fight against each other and then pick off the wounded squad that survived the encounter. That way we can loot 6 boxes instead of 3. I don't know what strategy you would call that, vulture?
Everyone has their own philosophical views on how to play a Battle Royale and the path they take to achieve Victory. Everyone simply has their own playstyles too. Most of my friends are aggressive players while I tend to be more passive. We sync up well because they help me become more aggressive in some situations while I encourage them to retreat to a better vantage point if our chances of success seem slim.
You can choose to be aggressive by dropping into a higher tier loot area, but you're more inclined to get wiped out right away. If you're a player with a high K:D ratio I can see it being more worth the risk since you know you'll be able to survive engagements more often. On the other hand, if you are a passive player and loot from the very corner of the map where other players aren't going, chances are you'll get decked out in gear and weapons before you come across your first enemy squad. If that squad happened to be the one coming from a higher tier loot area, you're probably all set for the end of the match aside from ammo and grenades.
The goal of the game is to be the last squad remaining. There's no wrong or right away of getting there. Data could lean in a particular direction but in the end it's about how your individual and your squad mates playstyles mesh together to survive longer than anyone else (and have FUN doing it!). That's how I see it, at least.
