I’ve studied matchmaking in Apex across many types of accounts, for like 4 years. I’ve shared various experiments and experiences here on the forum.
Right now, utilizing 4 different accounts (each with different stat outcomes, from super low skill to super high skill) I feel like I have a (small) understanding of how matchmaking works (FOR PUBS)
Performance = Kills +Damage + Placement
Respawn still uses a “bucket” system. They still lump players into skill buckets depending on their performances. But it’s not just performances that dictate what bucket you land in— how much “data” you have on your account will impact how fast or slow the game shifts you from one bucket to another.
Doing really well (combination of kills, damage, and placement) increases your hidden MMR metric and that lumps you into a higher bucket. Going up and down the ladder of buckets happens at different paces for accounts with different data. My lower data account gets dropped into easier lobbies much faster (like after 10 straight losses with 0 damage) than my higher data account (which can take between 20-30 0 damage games)
Lower buckets are EASY to identify. Your teammates and the other 57 players in the lobby are players with little data on their account AND OR players who have performed very very poorly. It’s important to note that not playing for a long time will also drop you into these lobbies.
Higher bucket lobbies are typically all 4k 20 bomb type players. Seriously. Solo queuing typically takes noticeable longer to find a match, because the lobby is typically comprised of the top 4 or 5% of players. Even my teammates in these lobbies are more often Masters or Preds.
