Re: Who plays well with Crypto?

@PJBurrows1991 I never said anything about Octane with crypto. But he can fill the free slot, if you have an octane player. He could be flanking more, since he can get there the fastest. Much like the pathfinder - it's best if he comes in at unexpected angles.

Wraith-path is most likely going to be a mainstay duo for competitive play. So if you want to add a crypto to that, you'll just have to get rid of wattson.

Although I do think path is not as terribly necessary on this map as he was on KC, so maybe wraith-crypto-wattson could work too.

Wraith definitely ranks much higher than path in Crypto setups, there's no doubt about that one. Unless you're playing a very specific camping spot, that only zipline can reach (not that many of those on the new map) - then maybe crypto-wattson-path could have some merit. But utilizing crypto's ult effectively in this comp would be hard (well you can still zap everyone in the final circle - that's definitely a very strong play and doesn't depend on your comp at all).

P.S. Crypto is strong and fun, but I don't think we'll see much of him played in high level tournaments.

Probably will still be wraith-path-wattson with a mix of lifeline.

In a less coordinated environment (e.g., if you just can't depend on a well timed wraith portal), any legend will do just fine with crypto. The important part is good communication between crypto and the rest. If crypto goes in to drone and others engage exactly at the same time - it's never going to work, no matter what legends you play. As crypto, you just have to get used to using your drone much less with such teammates; as others, you have to learn to pay better attention when crypto is droning.

If teammates are going in hard, you can always leave a quick drone to scout the back - slide, release drone and immediately exit the drone (you should still be sliding by the time you leave the drone, so you won't lose much momentum for using the drone). At the very least the drone will force anyone coming from behind to go around it and slow them down. At best, it will be shot and you'll know they're coming.

I agree wraith works better than path in a crypto setup. I main crypto now, I’m rank 6th on PS4 for enemies scanned with drone. I use his EMP a lot now, I never use to use it as much when I was first getting the hang of him.

I think I’m going to search for a wraith and a Wattson. Although Wattson is a defensive player, I think she works well with crypto and wraith.

Well wraith-wattson-crypto tactic is pretty straightforward - same as last season.  Set up in a position and just sit there. Scout with crypto to know everything around and know where to concentrate the walls. Scout for next position, relocate with wraith portal, set up the wattson camping equipment. Rinse and repeat.

Naturally skyhook, capitol, lava city are some of the best end circles for this. But end points like the tower between fuel depot and capitol are not bad either.

Ranking progress may be a bit slower like this, since you probably would end up with no kills until lategame (if ppl don't need to push a wattson, they won't - so you get easier placement, but you won't get targets to kill). I guess you can just get 3 charged rifles, find a long range fight with crypto and steal some kills.

I still dont understand crypto, i think hes useless, always out of the fight and can do nothing without his drone. And even the emp isnt that great unless your close... but not too close or ill get hit too... i love seeing a team with crypto, just push the fight, they are probably down one man as hes trying to get back in the fight, or hes flying around. Never had him he a problem when ive gone agianst hi .

  • @Jem450R  If you feel your crypto is useless, then it's just a bad crypto (or bad teammates of crypto) XD. Information is power in BR's, especially in solo queue (where everything is just so much more chaotic). On the other hand, that doesn't mean crypto should be constantly scouting - do that only when you need to know something (e.g., entering through a choke from outside the zone - let crypto check first; you can still turn around if you don't like what you see), not when you already know where enemies are.

Playing with crypto is a more tactical game. Gather your intel, plan your approach, dominate (or abort and go hide in a corner). If you know everything, then you can engage enemies when they really don't want that (e.g., fighting some1 else (come in at the worst time (for all of them) possible), hiding somewhere and then needing to move from zone (squeeze them between zone and you). You can also choose not to engage and never run into an unexpected ambush. The idea is to ACTUALLY know positions of every single enemy around you, not pretend you do ("I think that squad should be rotating somewhere around there, eh, or there.. there could also be a couple of rats, uhm, somewhere..."). With crypto you can get precise answers. How much value you can squeeze out of that knowledge is entirely up to you.

As for hitting teammates/self with EMP - hitting teammates is usually still a net positive gain, so don't mind doing that. Hitting self can be avoided by dropping armor (well, you kind of know exactly when it will hit, when you're doing it yourself; e.g., if you're in a safe building in final circle and want to emp everyone and come out guns blazing - a fight starts outside - you put a drone at your feet, EMP, drop armor, take armor, rush out to mop up). The fighting enemies won't have the luxury to drop their armor to avoid crypto's ult damage (if they do that they just die to their opponents). A lot of crypto players don't even manage to hit the EMP... they just let the drone be shot before it goes off (main mistakes: 1) they go into LoS of enemies with drone when they could just do it safely from behind wall/rock; 2) they start the EMP too late and give enemies too much time to shoot it or worst of all 3) they EMP and forget, leaving an extremely easy to shoot stationary drone).

P.S. Unlike bloodhound (who can only track moving enemies), crypto is extremely good at finding the solo rats - find em, kill em for some easy points and better placement.

Is crypto the best legend in Apex? Nah. Is he good for any style of play and any situation? Also nah. Is he still great? Yup, most certainly.

    A. Theres no solo queue, so thats pointless. And gathering intel, sitting and waiting is just asking to be flanked or ambushed. Litterally see no team use crypto on ranked, playing or streamers... hes a neat legend, that unfortunately doesnt seem to have a place in this fast paced, always moving game...

If you can position the drone ahead of your position it seems to spot without needing to be manually used.  I found this out accidentally.  Which I think is a pretty strong asset.  Unfortunately maintaining that leap frog tactic pushing the drone out then the squad follow rinse and repeat seems tedious.  If sound wasn't so vital in locating enemies I could see his value but other than it being more nothing more than a novelty right now at best.  Picking up banners with the drone but needing to recoup downed teammates tends to just stave off the inevitable.

Id love it if you could put the drone on follow mode, and it just hovered over you... i have an rc drone that does this, and would make crypto much more mobile...

I was actually surprised that this wasn’t possible. Dumb hacker drone can’t even follow his master!
