It's a digitally created simulation. The events do not happen in 'reality'. The simulation is tweaked every time a new aspect of the fake reality is created, i.e. replicators, evo generators.
All lore is simply a fiction, created to make the game more interesting to those watching.
would love to see more of the reality explained, it doesn't seem like everything is intuitive and clear to me as of now. especially in the play
