Should we pay to play rank?
Ryan Rigney, Respawn's director of community and communication, asked on twitter is it a good idea for people to pay to play in rank games to lessen cheaters from creating multiple accounts when they...
Forgot to mention their ridiculous 20 tick servers! To be constructive though, why not just charge ranked entry fee with legend tokens? Problem solved!
Because screw your quality experience, it's all about the money.
@apostolateofDOOM If ranked was given dedicated servers of better quality than the pub servers I'd be game.
However let's be honest....that wouldn't happen lol. I aint paying for slow queue times just to grind out a badge and maybe a trail lol. Especially when they would have to make ranked expensive enough to actually ward off smurfs/cheaters.
@MandatoryIDtagIf they did make better dedicated servers exclusive to those that pay it would be a massive middle finger to everyone that supported the game up till now and go against all their excuses so far on why they can't improve things so i agree, it won't happen, and i also agree it's not worth paying for anyway.
Legend tokens and (as has been already suggested countless times) raising the entry level for ranked to 100 would be perfectly reasonable with no downsides from what i can see.
@apostolateofDOOM Yeah it would be a middle finger to the rest of the playerbase I agree. However if you're trying to sell an entire game mode on a free BR you need some sort of carrot to bait players in with lol....and "fair matches" is not a sufficient bit of bait lol.
If this comes to pass it will likely be the death of ranked play lol.
@MandatoryIDtag As twitter shows, never underestimate the stupidity of idiots.
Penalties just don't work with games of entertainment mostly.
Now, sure, there should be some penalty, but at the end of the day, players need to want to play your game. Too much fear of this leads to what we have now with all the bad behavior, not just in Apex, but in all games...in fact in Apex you're still rewarded for your bad behavior.
If anything, the Arena events show exactly what you need, so does the battle pass...incentives. It's just right now you get rewards and incentives for playing things but not necessarily staying in the game or playing with a team. The incentives need to not just revolve around your doing things, but doing the right things.
One, do not allow rewards for people who leave the game early (which means before they gray out and can't be respawned, or as it is now, if they aren't respawned in 2:30 after pickup). I mean, let the players leave, but do not register their in game rewards for things like kills, opening supply bins, etc.
Two, Respawn needs to get a grasp on that if they have team based characters, they need to be GOOD. Better than good, as in super compelling to use. People will always run Wraiths, Paths, Octanes because they don't depend on other team members in the perception of many using them. But Wattson, Crypto and Rampart are only used by the most insane/dedicated/foolhardy.
Three...incentives...they don't even need to be a lot. They need to reward proper play and finishing games. Experience really isn't enough because the level cap, but it is the right instrument if you look at how it is scored, for starters. You get points for time in game, that's good. You get points for revives, excellent! You get points for kills, on and on. It's just that xp doesn't matter as a reward. Start making xp more valuable, to convert, I dunno, to some low amount of crafting materials, and you might have something going. Especially since Respawn is always moving the goal posts on items anyway, adding a ridiculous number of charms and recolors every time a character or weapon is added. I'd go with that. Or maybe just give the reward for ranked play.
