There is also a high probability that if you are both running in a Smoke that you can hear eachother moving and shooting and similair, A experienced Apex Legends player can easily hear where you are, look in your area and spray or look carefully and spot you. Don't forget that Bloodhound's ultimate or Crypto's Drone or even a single damage number displaying on screen can give away your position and get you wounded.

Try and take cover if you believe a enemy team or player deploy smoke and shoot you at you through the smoke, It's a very effective way of hitting players.
