I do not understand the need get up close and trade damage face to face with the opposition. Of course there are times when it is required but it seems to be standard procedure... Maybe I'm thinking too hard, the competitive nature in me I guess.

100% agree. The farther away I can stay while doing damage, the less likely they are to be able to damage me back. I absolutely love it when I'm frying some kid with a charge rifle and he's trying to decide which of his guns will work better at 100 meters, shotty or r-99.
