Verhulst on Classic response curve vs. ALC

Hello fellow controller nerds, all three of you.  Since switching from Genburten's absolutely nutty ALC settings back to 4-4 classic around the time of the Sweden LAN, Verhulst has been asked to talk about his experience and opinions on this topic.  Here is the video.  He amply demonstrates the relative advantages of both.  Then he makes a convincing argument for using Classic, at all skill levels.

I love Verhulst, he's one of the few guys at this level who doesn't sound he is spewing horse excrement most of the time (if you're familiar with his videos, he frequently just plays without saying a word).  I just might try going back to Classic for a while, one more time.  I did so for a few days a couple months ago, but I felt like my performance went down compared to with my ALC settings.

Note in particular his discussion of pitch vs. yaw and why he thinks it's better to have one's pitch (vertical sense) lower than their yaw (horizontal), as the default settings do.

  • @pandareno1999 Biggest takeaway is the obvious one- There is no one magic setting that works for all. He tried genburtons for 3 months and didn't like it.

If I remember right, someone did a poll of controller players in Sweden and found that over half used classic 4/4, 4/3 or 5/4.

I've debated going back and try that but I do feel alcs helped my recoil control which was why I tried it to begin with.

Same.  But he makes a very good argument for using settings that favor horizontal tracking over ones that favor recoil control.  Do you have your pitch and yaw equal, or higher yaw than pitch?  This is something I've adjusted at least a couple of times.  Right now my ADS senses are the same, but my look sense has slightly higher yaw than pitch.

Been on ALS for the longest time, wouldn't go back either, on top of that, I also fine tune my settings per optics.

@pandareno1999 Mine are not the same. The video I watched to start my ALC settings told me not to set them the same.
  • Never actually bothered trying ALC and just sticked with 5-4 since. If I turn ALC on, would the settings be on 5-4 since I don’t want to move away from that that much?

@Cheese9Man Not sure if it's exactly the same. Adjusting your senses on ALC could take some time to fine tune, but I think it's worth it.

@Cheese9Man The settings will be at whatever is default - Classic, I think 3-3 or maybe 4-3. There are lines drawn on the sliders that match these values.  None of them are perfect, but you can find charts that give numerical values for the various default sensitivities.  I had hoped it worked the way you suggest, matching whatever settings you already have on, but unfortunately that's not the case.

My favorite elements are total control of dead zone, response curve, and the extra yaw and pitch.  If you want to mess with response curve, I'd recommend starting with something in between classic and linear.  Mine is 7, just a bit flatter than Classic.  Extra yaw and pitch let you have more movement capabilities without changing your overall feel.  I just max them out for look and bumped up a bit for ADS.
