What is up with matchmaking?

So I haven't played in a long time and decided to play again and convinced my roommates to play with me. I'm level 350 and consider myself average. My other roommate is a little bit below average and my other one just started playing. We did orientation matches with our friend who just started and then after we finished those our first match had Predators with insane stats. Why are we with them? I understand it's probably using my skill rating to match make with and I'm fine with that but I'm not even close to a Predator. I haven't even played in probably a year and that's first my match? We ended up getting destroyed the rest of the night because that's the lobbies we kept getting. I'm not asking to be put with bad players I'm just asking for a fair match. We didn't go into this wanting to win we just wanted to have fun but it's not fun to die within 25 seconds of every encounter because the enemy team has 10x the play time your squad has combined. I mean it was basically unplayable. I read the blog post on how SBMM works but I'm really question if it really works like that
