Why won't EA allow for collegiate branded competition?
Hello! I'm a Collegiate Esports Coach. I've been working in this industry for roughly 4-5 years now and have seen the growth of esports throughout the last couple years. The collegiate space has grown tremendously with college and universities starting impressive Esports programs for their student body. Many game developers have taken the additional steps to ensure all of the collegiate community has an opportunity to continue their competitive careers while pursuing a higher education. These opportunities allow players to keep playing the games they love, compete, and get a degree. My question is, why is EA shutting out collegiate competition? I have been involved with the Collegiate Apex community very heavily for the last 6 months or so, and it has been a struggle for a lot of student leaders/coaches/program directors to find ways for their Apex community to compete.
I was told this is because EA doesn't want the word "collegiate" affiliated with their brand, game, or tournaments. In addition to this, they require that TOs (Tournament Organizers) make their tournaments open to everyone and not private, which I can understand. However, with that being said, the only known space for collegiate teams to play is with a couple specific organizations that hosts tournaments in the Spring/Summer/Fall seasons. This is a problem because these leagues are open to anyone, allowing for no true dedicated collegiate competition space. I love the fact that we can have open tournament lobbies don't get me wrong, but this makes it so the collegiate community has to play against random teams alongside other colleges. Not to mention, these lobbies fill up fast leaving a lot of college teams out of the competition.
I really believe if EA took notice of how much the collegiate space needs them, we would all benefit. I speak on behalf of all the Collegiate Apex students trying to represent their school and play the game we all love at a competitive level. If collegiate organizations such as the NECC, NACE, ECAC, etc.. aren't allowed to have private lobby privileges, then I hope EA makes the effort to host their own version of a collegiate championship series or something along those lines. I'd imagine it would resemble the ALGS. It would be more work sure, but there are so many people in this community that are willing to do anything to help make this happen.
