Microphone turned off in-game

I use a ps4 microphone through a ps4 controller in order to talk online with friends. The microphone does not work unless plugged in to the controller. 

When I open the game, it recognizes the controller as an input method and can be used normally, but it turns off my microphone; the game, discord and even windows stop recognizing it and no audio can be head from it. This is a big problem since I don't have another mic and I am don't want to play with friends without being able to talk to them at the same time. Please help.
