When Dice announced it was coming back I groaned.
I remember when V came out I was against removing it and it was probably one of the reasons V got off to a bad start along with attrition.
However I grew to enjoy playing without it because you could now hide again and not be constantly lit up purely by a player who had no idea you were there.
So when Dice said it was coming back I wasn't looking forward to it but I must admit I'm really glad it's back.
With the detailed environments of modern battlefield games with so many dark areas in every map I feel 3D spotting improves the game and allows players to avoid frustrating deaths to invisible enemies if they are willing to put in a little effort.
Some will argue it's a cheap tactic but many players don't actually spot as it still requires extra effort and adds a delay to when you fire your first bullet.
I also personally feel that as a mid range sniper and tank main I am contributing more to my team by spotting enemies for my teammates.
So now that we've had it back for a few weeks what do you think about the return of 3D spotting?
- ATFGunr3 years agoLegend@Tank2042Man So far it’s been underwhelming, which isn’t entirely a bad thing. I get points for spotting which is good. The spots don’t last long and the teams don’t seem to pay much attention. When I make a spot though and suddenly see them get sniped, I think I’m helping which is also good.

I like it, just wished the "spots" lasted just a tick or two longer is all.

I like manual 3D spotting but dislike automatic minimap spotting after shooting. We also need stealth perks to counteract sensor balls and UAV scans.

3D spotting as a feature might not be a bad thing although I personally hate it. The issue I guess with 2042 is that there are just way way way too many options for spotting players even includes auto spotting when aiming close or near enemies, long are the days of hiding in a bush or cover...... Combine this with more players in smaller fighting spaces and much more open much with clear views there is just spotting going on constantly.
I feel the red chemlights are often more then enough to spot your enemies when it comes to bad visibility in modern games, I think it's more then fine in 2042 and doesn't need 3D spotting for that reason.
- RaginSam3 years agoSeasoned Ace@Tank2042Man I like it overall, at times it can feel a little cheap. Visually it can be really hard to see enemies, even in the open because of the colors, so it’s a bandaid for that. It’s an easy and intuitive way to communicate with your teammates. I think that it adds more to the game then it takes away. Battlefield has never been about camping somewhere for a long time without being detected.
However, I thought BFV’s implementation was probably the best. It was a perk that allowed certain classes to spot? The flare was perfectly balanced. Soon as you went behind cover, the spot would disappear. BFV had it nailed down to a science I thought. Spotting was limited, balanced, and it made a lot sense.
BF2042 has the break line of sight to make it the spot disappear. I’m not sure what my teammates see exactly? Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one spotting on my team. I’m pretty sure that has some truth to it because I almost always get the highest assist in matches.
They could also further balance spotting by making it only visible to teammates within 200 meters or whatever. I’d also be concerned that would cost more CPU performance or performance somewhere else? Little features can add up and make the game less stable and smooth. I could be very wrong on this though.
