Battlefield 2042 needs unique maps like Argonne Forest and Amiens
Some of the most fun maps many people seem to enjoy in Battlefield Games like Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V are maps with a forest setting like Argonne Forest and Solomon Islands.
But WHY is that? Well first of all I think its because they are heavy infantry driven maps. Some with a bunch of land vehicles and boats and thats it.
So many shooter games are out there but rarely they use the opportunity for a good forest map. I dont get why. Its environment itself is perfect for destruction but also to maintain a good amount of cover by using trenches and bunkers, etc.
Another example of unique and very fun maps are urban driven maps like Amiens, Rotterdam and Devastation:
Fort Vaux is another good example for a fun map and many many others too. Pearl market from Battlefield 4 is amazing too!
We really need infantry focused maps for battlefield 2042. The amount of people being able to fight with vehicles is still very low compared to the people playing as infantry and this is how most people play the game. If we take a look at the recent data DICE shared about the new map exposure it makes it pretty clear:
Most action takes pleace in the middle layer of the map where vehicles wont have much access to aside from choppers shooting into the mountain base.
Map Design for shooter games is all about line of sight with a good amount of cover. I dont understand why the first 7 base maps were release as they are but for the future I really hope to see more unique maps without copy pasted container assets all over the place.
I wont deep dive into how to do good map design because this is something a level designer working on an FPS game should be familiar with. So take it as feedback from a player that wants to like the coming maps for Battlefield 2042. Maybe the team manages to bring even two maps in season 2 but I wont set my hopes to high here.
Thread is open for discussion so feel free to add your thoughts to it.
Cheers.
