I really thought in Portal it was going to cover most of the games. I was excited to think I might be playing on a Titan map and using my old friend the mech walker.
I too was really excited for Portal when first announced. IMO they probably wanted to do more for Portal but when the game tanked they moved teams around and focused more on the main game to improve it. I really wanted them to bring more BF2 maps to Portal and assets.

It's a misconception that they couldn't do more because they had to move teams around to "fix" the game.
2042 was broken at launch, crashing every round, infinite loading screens, 100% CPU usage on black screens (still a problem to this day), total lack of team play mechanics. I could go on listing all the problems I experienced...
The state of the game as it is now however, both in content and quality is how it should have launched. If 2042 launched in this state, it would've been well received even with the atrocious "specialists".
Portal was "abandoned" for the same reason the game launched poorly, negligence and poor live service. It's a wonder that we even ended up getting the transport helicopter into All out warfare, I remember asking for it years ago. The fact that it took that long, tells you that Portal was always an after thought and not a love letter. Another issue with Portal is the ridiculous XP restriction on using AI. More on that here: https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion/Allow-FULL-XP-with-DEFAULT-AI-in-Portal-stop-this-Moderate-XP/m-p/13670596/highlight/true#M200584

I completely agree with what you've stated, I loved and still love portal, honestly just because of the potential it does have. I created a server using the El Aleman map, with 20 AI on my team, and 40 on the other, put it on night mode, and watched the carnage unfold lol, I ended up also using the bc2 assets and rained down mortars, yeah I only got player XP for it but it got me close enough to unlocking the javelin 🤣. I hope that portal is continued, but simply that they do better with it. More content for portal is a must, full XP for vanilla AI, is a must. It has/had so much potential to be something great, in a world of games that lacks heavily with originality.

Which stunk because I really wanted much more with Portal.
Maybe the next one will retry the portal thing?

Hopefully. Portal is great but could be even better with further development.

The problem with portal is that it is set up to give an inferior experience compared to the matchmaking.
Matchmaking gives you Full progression + PvP A.I to fill for the missing players. Players are 1-2 clicks away from starting a match.
Portal only gives full progression with the A.I disabled so unless you have a community of enough people to start a server, you will not be getting anywhere in portal. Players have to manually find and select your server. Your server is also probably buried under a ton of "1000% damage hArDcOrE L33T" and 4 man kill trading mastery progression servers
