BF2042: How to change/choose team? I ALWAYS play in US team!

Is it just me, or is there no option to change or choose the team in my custom matches? The problem is: I want to play for the Russian team sometimes, but I ALWAYS play for the US team... I've tried using Portal mode to reverse (RU: team 1; US: team 2) but I still start in US...

    ok... 2 years later I found out. You can't choose your side of the match... BUT, if the next round is on the same map and you wait for the match to start automatically, you're playing on the other team this time. Example: You created a private game in portal mode with only one map, Caspian Boarder. You will play the first match on the US team, when that match ends, wait a few moments until it starts again and you will be on the Russian team.

    Way back when, someone pointed out on AOW that you’d start on a different team if you selected a different character on the main screen first before selecting a match to play. 

    don’t know if that was true or just coincidence.
