BF2042 is now going to get clobbered by the COD Vanguard release

Both as an investor in EA and also as a vivid BF fan, I am not amused by the poor excuses we now get from EA for the go-live delay on BF2042!

And we are several in our venture group that are concerned about EA BF2042 now loosing the first-mover advantage, as COD: Vanguard is scheduled to release on November 5, 2021.  Similarly available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X.

Die hard BF fans can keep claiming that they don't care about COD and that its not the same.  But matter of fact is, that a large volume of potential BF2042 customers are now instead starting out with buying a competing product and may never return.  And those that do, will at best come weeks or many months later.  The mass volume that should have been the bread and butter for the BF2042 revival from day1 of release is now smoldering away.

Honestly, it is a disaster in many dimensions and we are not amused.

Personally I do not play COD at all !

I find that the COD game is more for the individuals, while the BF gameplay has much more in it about the team work and collaboration.  Likewise the BF mechanics comes across to me as being more technical and sophisticated.  Without offending anybody, guess its OK to say that the learning curve to master various elements in BF is also much higher.  All which I personally enjoy the challenge of!

But many many play both.  And especially on PC, there players have in average many more games and play a higher variation of games across aka a month compared to the console players.

And as we all noticed, many gamers were complaining about the BF2042 game price now for GOLD or ULTIMATE editions.  Finding it too expensive.  So its not like everybody just have unlimited money to buy whatever new game comes out next week, if just having spent $60 on COD Vanguard this week.

So I am not concerned about many of us here on this forum.  Many surely in a privileged position, with excess resources to get through the day.  But that is not the profile of the vast majority of BF2042 buyers.  And they are all instrumental to bring in the cash EA needs to keep adding exciting updates to the game and run servers across the globe for all to get a great gaming experience.

A botched start is not helpful and they had 3+ years in the planning to prep for this.  So yes, I am a dedicated fan, despite big disappointments with BF1 and BFV.  And yes, my expectations were high for this next venture, thx to EA's own communications to get this one right!

Reason for my disappointment that EA stumbled just before the finish line and they appear to have learned nothing from previous communication breakdowns with their player base.

(thx for allowing my venting, as we all want the best of this next game!  😃)

  • considering the less than lukewarm reception this year in particular for Vanguard's beta, I expect COD Vanguard to be a serious flop like Ghost or Infinite Warfare at least compared to the expecations Activision sets for a Call of Duty release, so much so that it might seal the fate of Sledgehammer games.
Vanguard as a product might just signal a shift in how Call of Duty does it's business, because the priority is Battle Royale. I expect a repeat of what happened with Black Ops Cold War where the actual game itself took a nosedive in interest and Warzone became number 1 priority, and even that was botched because the intergration of Black Ops weapons was a balancing disaster the anti cheat is barely working ever.

Battlefield though? yes the hype for 2042 is insane, it will lift the intial tide. but we have seen suspiciously little content, what we have seen from leaks is quite buggy and unfinished even by pre alpha standarts, and I don't buy the "it's an early build" excuse, I have played too many betas and both previous alphas of Battlefield to know where this is going. and I think the massive hype is setting people for a disappointment and backlash, also it's EA and I already see them making the season pass much more heavily integrated into the core of the game than ever.

it's entirely possible that both Vanguard and BF2042 become disappointments with lasting consequences for their respective franchises.

sorry for sounding this gloomy, I just don't have a good feeling about this year's showing from either franchises, and also considering we still are in effect in a middle of a pandemic, this has proven a challenge in game development across the entire industry, we can hope for the best but compromises were already being made and I can't blame the developers- their safety matter more than the games they produce.

Honestly @CyberDyme I expected more from you. I really don't know who ever started the BF vs CoD debate, but they are entirely different games and I never see a BF vs Fortnite or CoD vs Overwatch debate....

    Sorry @infantrypeasant ,

Think you misunderstood my post, as it was not a BF vs COD post.

I also consider them vastly different, though they are both AAA FPS games.

My concern is that the 'first mover advantage' that EA had with the long planned BF2042 October game release cycle now is lost.  As many gamers do buy more games (many both COD and BF), but they do not have just an unlimited pile of cash to spend at any point of time.  It was a great window of opportunity, as we have had a longer period with no new major FPS entrants.  But now with COD releasing first, then many of these potential BF2042 buyers will instead flock to the earlier releasing COD game and BF2042 will then get secondary spending priority.  So at best, a delayed revenue stream coming into EA as result.

The Big Bang effect being muted somehow.  Exactly by how much, we can first assess after the fact.  But the original strategic marketing scoop we had for EA is lost, as was evidenced already by the total silence at Gamescom.

FYI: EA share price dropped to $130 upon that announcement, equal to a $4B value drop of EA.  Fingers crossed that we will still be in time to make the max out of the seasonal xmas sales...

  • No doubt those that want and can afford to, will buy both games eventually, though many people will have to make a choice come November as which to buy (or buy first). COD is COD and those players that love the franchise will buy it regardless, however those COD players whom EA/DICE are so eager to entice over, may not be able to also buy BF2042 from the off.  The problem then arises for EA/DICE, is when they get to a point they can but BF2042 also, will they have liked what they have seen/read about it.  I can see BF losing a few customers due to that - unless they smash it out of the park from the off that is.

@infantrypeasant Still, you have to agree that BF and CoD are more alike than BF & AoE or BF & Fortnite, and by a quite a large margin.

I'm not saying they're mutually exclusive, but they are closely competing with each other in the AAA FPS market.
  • @CyberDymeI agree, because I was one of those guys with limited gaming funds who would have to make a choice between CoD and BF each year--and we all know that once you've invested a lot of time into unlocking things in a game, and you're keeping pace with your friends, it's hard to stop playing and switch to a fresh new game. There are a lot of crossover players, like me, that play both.

Also, consider that a lot of non-gamer people will be buying these games as Christmas gifts. So which one to buy? If CoD is the only one available when someone does their holiday shopping, guess which one is probably going to be purchased. There are many other scenarios that will impact the bottom line, too, but you get the idea.

@gruntbrews_vicv I was lucky enough to get on the Beta. In my opinion way better that the way COD has gone in recent times and more likely to steal veteran COD players than BF who want a more realistic game without the Fortnite style skins.
