I believe people forget what people had been saying about BF4 within the same time frame afters its release as BF2042.
BF4 started as a flashy and buggy unfinished mess like BF2042. It was only 2+ years of actual dev support that actually made it what people remember now.

That said, BF2042 has game design issues with its maps, bad armored vehicles, community support and general atmosphere.
