Classic BF1942 is sweet

I'm biased because  I played that one day one  back when I was in my 20s.   I loved re-experiencing the 2 maps they recreated along with fairly faithful vehicle/class loadout recreations.  I instantly had more fun playing that than BFV.   I just loved the simplicity of it.  Just select 1 of 5 classes and that's it.  No changing weapons. Gadgets.  NO health regen.  Vehicles and tanks are on the battlefield.  NO upgrades.  Something refreshing about the simplicity for me.  I could immediately focus more on playing the game that was in front of me on the battlefield and less on winning in the menus.   Also was nice to see players  switching to AT when we needed it.

Just had a really 2 fun rounds.

It had some nice touches the original game didn't have like cattails/weeds down by the river that weren't too thick but allowed you to sneak a bit.  You could swim under the water in the river.  Destruction of course.  Sniper binocs painted targets in red.

One thing that I think needs adjusting was the 3 rocket limit of the AT class.  IN the original, AT class had 6.  And one reason for that is that the bazooka/(rocket) is the main weapon and gadget  of that class.   AT just has a pistol and nade otherwise .  It felt it should have been 6 rockets loadout in this recreation as well.    Also when shooting rockets into the rear of a tank it felt like it should take fewer rockets.  It seemed like it was more than 2.

Also missing, afaik, were ammo and medic stations.  On such a big map with no health regen, finding those of great benefit.  Not sure I like that they put the run over the dead body to get ammo in BF42 classic.  And finding the weapon/kit on the ground is harder than it should be.  Was easy back in BF42.

Last I think you can spawn on squad mates iirc.  That's fine I guess.  It probably adds to the merry go round nature though which modern BF becomes.  On Battle of the Bulge we had a little too much chasing each other in circles which is surely encouraged by spawning on squad mates.   IN the original BF42 there were no squads.  Just 1 team and spawning on flags.

But anyway liked what I saw overall albeit it was just 2 rounds and full of nostalgia.  Wasn't going  to play Portal but when I saw the BF42 Classic preset I just had to try it.

  • Yes all agreed @trip1ex ,

The nostalgia in Portal games was definitely and actually the only reason I decided to buy this game!

Not the super heros and not the lame Hazard Zone BR game mode.

But for the Portal to truly bring back the sweet memories and deliver in this remastered version, then we need several of the classic components back for it to work for us.  Like some of these classic basic features:

    • Squads of 4-5 players
    • Working squad selection and change if we want
    • Comrose that works to set squad orders and communicate with each other
    • Scoreboard both during the match and after
