CPU upgrade dilemma for BF2042

Hello my friends.

I want to upgrade my CPU from my current AMD R5 5600x

I want to get either RYZEN 7 5800X3D or RYZEN 9 5900X, currently prized the same in my country, and being my last choice for upgrading on my AM4 platform (X570 chipset)

My GPU is the RX 6750 XT and my monitor resolution is 1080p and my RAM speed is 3200Mhz

Which of them you think will perform better for battlefield 2042 in CPU intensive 128p rush or conquest modes?

I am on dilemma because I upgrade mostly for gaming, but I can use the extra cores of 5900X for my video rendering and for music production need.

In PC Builds's Bottleneck Calculator seems that 5900X will be less bottleneck for my GPU than 5800X3D, on the other hand I see that most advice for 5800X3D for gaming in 1080p, so I am a bit confused there.

So, I game with a 5800X3D and can not say enough good things about this CPU, ALBEIT I do also have a 4090 GPU and game at 4k 120hz.

In your circumstance I would still choose the 5800X3D but you gotta ask yourself.....do you game more than you do video production? if so then the 5800X3D is a no brainer.

The issue stands on your GPU. but also gaming at 1080p is giving you this bottleneck. The GPU is better off gaming at 1440p in this situation.

On the other hand, to alleviate stress from your GPU and you don't plan on upgrading your GPU anytime soon, the 5900x is a no brainer. 12 cores is more than enough to handle any game.

looking at your current build, if you were to get a better monitor to be able to game at 1440p, or even a 4k monitor but still set it to 1440p gaming, you'll still come out on top.

@V-SynthNinjaI recently upgraded to a 1440p monitor, and am pretty amazed at the improvement for everything I do on my PC. 1080p is a long staple of gaming so I get why that’s your focus. If you’re dropping hundreds of dollars anyway, consider trying to future proof yourself for the eventual upgrade. I always try and buy the best I can, even if it’s better than my immediate need. Also consider your PSU, it’s going to dictate what you can run. Put your rig into one of the PC part picker sites and see what you need and if you can run the new parts. The 3DX is geared towards gaining, but it’s not like the 5900x is bad for gaming. Since you said you do editing and other things the 5900x is probably your better choice. Heck you can overclock to 4.9ghz if you have the courage 😉 Its all about the clock speed baby!

I have read somewhere that the way games are coded they never use more than 8 cores / do not make use of the extra cores very well. So a 12 / 16 /++ core makes no extra benefit. I jumped from a 3800x cpu to a 5800x 3d cpu and holy cow what a jump. Was on fence like you - should I go for 16 core. But since I only game and read all the reviews - it was easy.
Though one important thing - this cpu gets hot because of the way this thing is made with the 3d cache. You need solid cooling or else this hits the max limit and throttles down.
I use thermal grizzy from kryonaut and a dark rock pro from be quiet and this keeps it on 70-80 max. Before I had 90 all the time.
Anyway I do recommend the 5800 x3d - no doubt !

I have the 5800X and it is more than enough for 2042.
I assume that the 5800X3D is even better for the job.
The 3D cache CPUs in general seem to be a real hit.

Thank you all, guys, for your replies.
I ordered the 5900X, which now is in limited availability in the stores and at a very good price.
I thought it would be a good upgrade also for my musical software like Studio One and Sonar and my VST Instruments and effects and for video rendering.
Also, relatively future-proof for my needs in gaming.
Still, I think that 5800X3D would be also a great choice.
Anyway, I use liquid cooling for my 5600X, compatible with the 5900X due to the same socket, so I guess I am covered regarding temps.

Tonight is my last day with my also wonderful 5600X :-)

very awesome to hear that! When you re-paste the new CPU, make sure you get some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaught, or if you don't wanna be messy with it, you can also get a 38mmx38mm sheet of Carbonaught or Kryosheet, this will also ensure there is an even distribution of thermal conductivity across the die.

@NehkidGramma84 Thank you so much!!! I have the Arctic Silver 5, and it gives me good thermal results. Is there a special reason to use the one that you purpose?

Given that you have that paste, i would stick with that if you have some left over laying around. They are very similar in performance actually. I was suggesting that carbonaught/kryo sheets cuz of their ease of use, and you can re-use them if you get a new CPU or cooler in the future.

@V-SynthNinja Artic Silver is a well established brand, hard to go wrong. I’ve got it in mine, most of friends as well. The biggest issue with any of it is using too much or not enough. I don’t think it ever goes bad, but if it’s really old I’d suggest a new tube just out of principle.
