Does this game look and feel like BF4 to you? And can Portal save it?
So DICE absolutely know that people loved BC2, BF3 and BFV (yes BFV lacked content and community features and has a massive cheater problem but technically speaking it's a great game when it comes to graphics, sound and gameplay and the gun play is easily the best out of any BF as it's so crisp and sharp).
We know that DICE knows this because Portal is pretty much based around BC2 and BF3. BF4 however is not in Portal at all, so why on Earth did they make 2042 feel and look so much like BF4? The gun play is all vague and the map design looks almost identical and IMO the graphics on BF4, yes OK BF2042 graphics are technically better but if you didn't know any better about the BF franchise you could easily believe that 2042 came out after BF4 if it weren't for the shear scale of it, and now I've played these massive maps with 128 players I'm not even sure that I even like it, sure I've played a lot of SQUAD with massive maps and 100 players but it just works with SQUAD because that's how it was originally designed to work, BF on the other hand was never supposed to be this big and personally I don't think it works.
The gun play in 2042 core mode somehow just feels all soft, spongy and vague, in BFV you could quite easily open fire on someone close quarters with a full auto SMG and you still have the clarity to be able to see exactly where the crosshair is and guide it to their head in order to finish them off quickly. No such clarity and control on 2042, for some reason when going full auto close range you can hardly even see the enemy anymore, everything is just a blurry mess, I can't quite figure out what the issue is but it's probably a combination of excessive muzzle flash, crappy crosshair/hit marker design and very dark enemy player models but either way it all adds up to a very odd situation where you don't feel fully in control of exactly whats going on.
The only possible saving grace here IMO is Portal, if they can hurry up and figure out how to renable weapon progression and unlocks in Portal and add more content and tuning options to it then the old classic BF experience could possibly be recreated, maybe. As it stands though Portal does seem quite restrictive, the way it was advertised have the impression that you could have any faction set with any other set of weapons and or completely cherry pick all the weapons and vehicles you wanted along with bullet velocity/drop etc so you could have Little Birds fighting Spitfires and all that but in reality we can only set one faction (with all its original weapons and weapon mechanics against another faction and that's it. We can't even use the logic editor that was so massively hyped up unless we select TDM or Free For All. And we can't even set sniper limits or tank limits etc.
I really hope Portal gets a lot of attention and gets all the content and deep customisation it needs in order to really save this game because bif it doesn't it'll be such a massive shame that we came this close to having the ultimate BF game.
