Games vs. Movies and the problem of replicas

For a lot of players, playing battlefield is like reading a book or watching a movie, except you are able to put yourself into the story and roleplay as yourself or a character.

Playing battlefield is a fantasy you want to immerse yourself into.

.The Specialists are a great addition from a gameplay point of view and I really like the idea and what I've seen so far.

The problem is when it creates replicas.

A movie doesn't have 2 or more identical characters. That would be ridiculous.

DICE, try to avoid creating replicas. It's not a big issue, but it can be in the long run and be a "hair in the soup of immersion", but something easily changed.

The solution can be that Specialists have generic codenames and generic backstory so you avoid creating replicas.

Otherwise you'll create a less believable fantasy to immerse the player into.

If there is only one Specialist type at a time in each round, then this isn't a problem and you can keep the individual identity.

  • I just wanna make my own character, which is a representation of me... Not some 'Specialist'. But I do have my doubts these specialists/heroes/operators; most notably if it will be pay-2-win content...

  • There is an abundance of gadgets, accessories, add-on cosmetics, which the players can use to customize their own 'specialists' in infinite number of ways.

In aka BF4, i didnt see much of a problem with the 4 solder types that we had there.  Which again each had the option to select among 5 different specialists.

Like the Assault soldier type could be one of the following specialists:

    Offensive,

    Defensive,

    Shadow

    Combat medic, or

    Grenadier.

    And for the enemy replicas?

Many movies seem to succeed despite the copy and paste of identical villains, like SW - Clone Wars and The Matrix, so dont see a big problem there either.

I never really do much deep study of the enemies and their facial features anyway in the game in which I am set up to combat.

    So buckle up Rick Deckard,

It's time for us to go bounty hunting and eliminate those pesky Nexus androids in the post-apocalyptic 2042-dystopian world!  :o)

JackFrags breaks down more details, and the same specialists are showing up at different times looking very different from each other...extremely different in one case. Cosmetic customization seems to be extensive.

But again, what Battlefield game do you not have a variety of same looking soldiers running around?

Also there's shots of what looks like standard soldiers. He's assuming thats AI units with basic soldier looks.

  • For many players, engaging with Battlefield feels akin to stepping into a personalized narrative, blending the immersion of a book or film with the freedom to roleplay as themselves or a distinct character. The introduction of Specialists enhances gameplay dynamics, offering diverse strategies and playstyles. However, the emergence of identical characters poses a jarring inconsistency, unlike movies where such duplication is implausible. To preserve immersion, DICE could assign generic codenames and backstories to Specialists, preventing duplicate appearances within a single round. This adjustment ensures each Specialist maintains a unique identity, enriching the game's believability and sustaining the fantasy that players eagerly seek to inhabit.
