So I have the digital download of BF2042 on PS4. My friend bought the disc standard edition for PS5, and then purchased the cross play bundle in digital store, to be able to play with me. He already had the PS5 version installed. How does he get the PS4 version installed??? He says he went into the store and it says not available. But he already purchased the cross play bundle.

Your PS5 friend needs then to download his crossplay bundle.
Or rather, he actually needs to download also the PS4 version of the game onto his PS5.
When you are on PS5, then it looks like this:
So when installed, its like he has two separate games on his PS5.
The PS5-version for the new-gen PS5 version, where he also can crossplay with the Xbox new-gen and PX worlds.
And then the PS4 version, which enables him to play with his PS4 friends on old-gen.

So he deleted it and reinstalled, but it only downloads the ps5 version. How does he access the ps4 download?

Don't know if its the same PS5 friend you have, but... 😀
This is how you get BF2042 onto your PS5, both the PS4 version and the PS5 version...
When you goto "Your Game Collection" there you see the
Your friend needs to have the disc inserted for it to pick this up.
It is also truly confusing somewhat on the PS5, as it does not show what you actually are getting until you put your cursor selection on it. Because the game icon appears to be there twice. But it is actually one for each of the two different versions. And this is where your friend needs to go back in again and then also install the other version if he wants both.
And first when both are installed separately do you then see also two identical apps on your desktop there:
And on the game launch area on the PS5 desktop you will then see two identical games. And again, you cannot tell them apart until you switch your cursor onto one of them (here my cursor is on the PS5 version):
Please notice that you can have both versions installed at the same time, so no need to de-install the full PS5 version, as he can also have the PS4 version next to it at the same time!
(provided that he has enough disk space...)

From my understanding the cross-gen bundle was only available through the purchase of the digital copy.

The Gold, and Ultimate Editions (Digital Only) all have access to the Cross-Gen Bundle. The Digital Standard Edition on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S has been upgraded today to also include this Cross-Gen Bundle.

I don't know the answer to that. I didn't you could digitally upgrade a physical copy of the game to another edition but reason would tell me that the upgrade may not contain the main game code but simply the additional game content consisting of skins, access to season passes, etc. .....all the extras in other words, not the gamev themselves.
