The old class system defiantly needs to comeback. Classes are a core component of the BF experience. If they want to do a hero shooter then they can make an off shoot BF franchise (or even use Hardline or Bad Company) and make that a game that delivers a different BF experience. Then they could alternate the releases of these games, where one year a the game delivering the traditional Battlefield experience is released and a year or two later, the hero shooter, or the game delivering whatever new creative experience they want to try is released.
This is essentially what Activision has done with COD. Modern Warfare has become the franchise that offers the “traditional COD experience”, while Black Ops delivers an experience that is over the top, unconventional and chalk full of customization.
Or, if they really want to keep specialists in this game they should take a page out of Battlefront, and make the specialists force multipliers, and limited to only one specialist type on the ground per team. If you gain a certain amount of kill streaks, or perform a certain set of tasks with out dying, or achieve a certain XP threshold without dying, you can choose to become any specialist you want, so long as that specialist isn’t currently deployed on the map, by someone else on your team. Once you die using a specialist, you respawn as a normal class, and try to climb the ladder again to unlock a specialist. Rinse and repeat.
