I have the sneaking suspicion that the problem is not with the pods but with the hitbox of the Nightbird.
Some time after my previous post, I fired a few shots from the 50mm cannon of the MAV at a nightbird and most of the shots that seemed to hit, ended up just fizzling on contact outside of one really direct hit.

But I'm guessing that the the pod impact animation is only triggered when the pods actually contact the hitbox? Also happens vs jets very often.
