With the changes that have seemed to improve issues with rubber-banding and frame rates, along with me just playing more and getting used to it, I'm actually enjoying it now and can see a lot of good/potential in it.
I've been as vocal in my criticisms as others up to now and there's obviously still a lot to do but I think in the end it'll turn out to be a great instalment.
I think one of the things that has contributed to me enjoying it more is that I've been mixing in online play with a few rounds solo against AI. It kind of slows things down and gives you the space to learn the maps more and get used to how weapons feel. And the added bonus of being able to unlock attachments for a new weapon (I think there's some sort of cap in place though) without the pain of playing online with a bog standard gun. I was playing with the SVK marksman rifle and it's awesome - 2 shot kill every time.
I think a lot of the criticism and frustration is still valid but it needs to be in perspective and properly directed (I'm not referring to anyone in this thread but more a general point). It's obviously decisions at a high level that caused the game to be pushed out in this state and some of the design decisions as well. Must be crap to be one of the people at DICE who've put their heart and soul into the game for thee past 3 years of their lives to end up being raged at by folk on reddit or where ever.
- RayD_O14 years agoHero@FatherDed Really glad to hear you are getting enjoyment from the game at last.
Hopefully the updates tomorrow and next week will improve things even more. 🙂 Personally I am still experiencing some performance issues which doesn't help the enjoyment factor.
I am still not a big fan of some of the maps compared to previous BF's and I think 7 maps is a bit sparse. Still don't like matchmaking etc but hopefully the game will be in a better place after more updates and additional maps.
You mentioned playing solo I assume that's on Portal. It may be something I should try out, as you say its good for learning maps and testing new guns etc.- 4 years ago
@RayD_O1 I retract all positivity from the previous post. It must have been a blip! Had a couple of rounds this evening and it was back to the usual miserable experience. I'm only playing at this point in the hope of major improvements coming soon.
I think you're right about the maps. Think the 128 player thing just doesn't work at least on these maps. But uts hard to put your finger on the main cause with so many things off.
The sound is a major bug bear for me. I'd taken for granted how good it was in BF5 and how much situational awareness it gave you. And now that's been almost totally taken away. I'm constantly getting taken by surprise, even by vehicles you should hear a mile away.
Hoping the patch tomorrow and the following one s a sizeable step forward. Although I'm amazed that they're nerfing the night bird and hovercraft but no mention of the bolte. It's at least as big a problem as the other 2. They need to be made slower, less nimble. They're so hard to combat.
Patience is thin now. There needs to be at least a glimmer of light soon.
- hairy16114 years agoNew Scout@FatherDed So I know you retracted this—and I won’t say every time I play it’s great, but I’m having a lot more fun than I did initially. Tuning in controls was a huge hurdle, but now I feel like I’m at least in the realm of where things feel ok. I also think taking the time to feel out how all the different specialists work and contribute to the squad dynamic has been enlightening. When I force myself to use a specialist productively I feel glimmers of previous battlefields’ squad play—I think the biggest problem is not everyone seems to play that way, so the squad dynamic never really develops. The performance issues are obviously still prevalent, but the biggest problem I’ve had is the core gameplay and how the systems work together to encourage team play, and though I haven’t see it totally work yet, I’m starting to see how it CAN. The more I play the more I hope people start to further develop their understand of how everything works together vs separately. I think at that point the game could be pretty fun. I’m rambling a bit at this point, but I’m more positive now than I was after my initial impressions.

@hairy1611 Yeah, it's definitely better than it was at first. It's gone from being jaw-on-the-floor bad to it's bad but I can see some core goodness there. On the few times where things have clicked and everythings come together, it's enjoyable. But it still feels like death by a thousand cuts - just so many annoyances and irritations over the course of a round that they completely overshadow the good stuff that's there.
I've been a software developer for 30 odd years now (on stuff much less complex and much more dull than a battlefield game) and know that you can put so much work into something but if you only get it to even 99% complete, none of that effort matters, all people see is the 1% missing/broken.
@RayD_O1 Good question about the KDR (or any other stat), I was wondering the same thing myself. I'd hope it doesn't count otherwise it would render the stat meaningless. Playing solo is definitely not the battlefield experience but I got to say, it's very enjoyable in a soothing, calming sort of way. There's a pleasure to be had from from mowing down 50-60 AI guys like that 🙂 Plus, like I mentioned before it's a quick easy way to unlock goodies for a new weapon.
- RayD_O14 years agoHero@hairy1611 There is definitely a lot to get to grips with and I personally have noticed a bit more teamwork evolving over the past few days, certainly more revives. Like you, I really hope with more updates and performance fixes BF2042 will be in a much better place.
