Also doesn't Portal allow clans/large groups to join the same server/team? That seems like the place they would allow this to happen if it isn't already.
I dont really want to join games where the other side is 20 players all on voice comms when I'm solo or playing with 1 friend. No offense to those people. And sure sometimes they suck anyway. But that scenario leads to pub stomps and no point in playing as a rule of thumb.
How is choosing who you work with not teamwork? The definition of teamwork is "the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient." You can do that with friends, strangers and everyone in between as long as everyone works together as a team. However, it is a lot easier with friends or groups that you already have a gaming relationship with.
As for Portal, while you can have everyone join the same server, it suffers from the same limitations the other modes do. You can only have 4 players on a team and it's not so easy to coordinate with other friends as they are indistinguishable from the rest of the players on your side. You also can't decide what side they will be placed on. You have to do a similar join, leave squad and rejoin trick.
In contrast, I really don't want to be forced to match up with randoms and would rather play with a group of friends whether that's just one or a dozen.
I'm not the clan type but I get why groups would want games they could play together like that. Heck, my friends and I have also gravitated toward groups like this in-game because they tend to play the objective, help one another out, etc. Seems foolish to me that EA / DICE would isolate and discourage groups from playing their game. It's essentially sending a signal that they don't want their business which is odd given how clans and other groups of friends tend to gravitate toward these franchises (e.g. CoD, BF and so on).
I understand as a lone player (or with a +1) it can be frustrating being steamrolled by a more organized group of players but the irony is that it's teamwork that is causing your real problem with groups of friends playing together. They are simply too effective and efficient together.
Another week gone by with no comms from DICE. I really hope on some progress here.
