Now EA confirmed the cross play details!
Just released by EA on CrossPlay:
EA has decided to delay the Technical Playtest session to be later this summer, quoting "the opportunity to properly test the cross-play functionality".. whatever that means if that is now a good sign or bad news for us???
Goods news for sure, as EA continues:
This means that a few thousand participants will join us to help us test some of our new features and functionality tat we are building from the ground up for BF2042. Do keep in mind that the Technical Playtest is purposefully not intended to be the full experience you will see in the Open Beta test, or at launch. It is a development-led environment with only a subset of features, focused on the technical performance alone."
"We will test a subset of cross-play functionalities during the Technical Playtest. This means that during this test, PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles will all be able to test playing together."
And now it becomes really interesting:
- PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles together...
and...
- PC, and consoles can opt-out from playing together!!!
(think EA have been listening to our concerns here!)
and...
- Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles together.
On top of this, EA also announced great details about how our game progression and purchases also will be enabled to be fully fluid and synched no matter what platform we play on, when and where!
So our progress and 'game properties' will be shared across all platforms and travel with us wherever we go. So our unlocked progress ad purchases on our PlayStation 4 will also carry over onto aka our Xbox or PC versions, if we do some gaming there. And vice versa back again if returning to the PlayStation from there!
I really like everything I heard here, as it gives us total freedom to go wherever we want with our gaming on BF2042. And also fully enable to join/play with friends at their locations when visiting them, no matter the platform they may be on versus what you have at home.
Exciting times ahead for us!

@CyberDymeGold and Ultimate just include the cross gen versions both, so are you saying I’d have to install both versions and play the PS4 version when playing with PS4 friends? Is that how you read it? If so, not sure that’s much better, hard drive space ain’t what it used to be.
I’ll continue to wait for more details, just seemed a bit confusing how they displayed cross play details with old and next gen together,Agreed @Boba_Brett711 ,
Its some weak descriptions we have gotten so far from EA on this. But yes, the info and the answers we got so far at the event is that the GOLD and ULTIMATE licenses both include the rights/access to both the old-gen and the new-gen console game environments. What is not clear yet if its working as a single game install, and we then within that single environment can search for and join games in both worlds, so to speak. Or if we indeed will need to make like two separate installs to be able to play both in the new-gen 128 player environment with the full size maps, but also join friends on old-gen in the smaller 64-player maps.
Based on the announcement also on the BattleHub environment with all remastered maps also to be there fore our pleasure, then I (maybe wrongly) assumed that we would be able to search for and join gameplay in all the environments from within the same single game entity on our new-gen consoles. I totally get your frustration if that is now not going to be the case, as the new-gen consoles are indeed sparse on SSD space so far on their primary drives...
Already now with just a few games installed, its literally full, so think next investment will have to be a large secondary SSD drive to be attached to it. As then you can install the game quickly from secondary to primary drive. Not ideal really, but its the best workaround so far, until Sony come clear on what alternative larger SSD drives we can install ourselves as primaries...
