Now EA confirmed the cross play details!

Just released by EA on CrossPlay:

EA has decided to delay the Technical Playtest session to be later this summer, quoting "the opportunity to properly test the cross-play functionality"..  whatever that means if that is now a good sign or bad news for us???

Goods news for sure, as EA continues:

This means that a few thousand participants will join us to help us test some of our new features and functionality tat we are building from the ground up for BF2042.  Do keep in mind that the Technical Playtest is purposefully not intended to be the full experience you will see in the Open Beta test, or at launch.  It is a development-led environment with only a subset of features, focused on the technical performance alone.

"We will test a subset of cross-play functionalities during the Technical Playtest.  This means that during this test, PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles will all be able to test playing together."

And now it becomes really interesting:

- PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles together...

and...

- PC, and consoles can opt-out from playing together!!!

(think EA have been listening to our concerns here!)

and...

- Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles together.

On top of this, EA also announced great details about how our game progression and purchases also will be enabled to be fully fluid and synched no matter what platform we play on, when and where!

So our progress and 'game properties' will be shared across all platforms and travel with us wherever we go.  So our unlocked progress ad purchases on our PlayStation 4 will also carry over onto aka our Xbox or PC versions, if we do some gaming there.  And vice versa back again if returning to the PlayStation from there!

I really like everything I heard here, as it gives us total freedom to go wherever we want with our gaming on BF2042.  And also fully enable to join/play with friends at their locations when visiting them, no matter the platform they may be on versus what you have at home.

Exciting times ahead for us!

@CyberDymeGold and Ultimate just include the cross gen versions both, so are you saying I’d have to install both versions and play the PS4 version when playing with PS4 friends? Is that how you read it? If so, not sure that’s much better, hard drive space ain’t what it used to be.

I’ll continue to wait for more details, just seemed a bit confusing how they displayed cross play details with old and next gen together,

    Agreed @Boba_Brett711 ,

Its some weak descriptions we have gotten so far from EA on this.  But yes, the info and the answers we got so far at the event is that the GOLD and ULTIMATE licenses both include the rights/access to both the old-gen and the new-gen console game environments.  What is not clear yet if its working as a single game install, and we then within that single environment can search for and join games in both worlds, so to speak.  Or if we indeed will need to make like two separate installs to be able to play both in the new-gen 128 player environment with the full size maps, but also join friends on old-gen in the smaller 64-player maps.

Based on the announcement also on the BattleHub environment with all remastered maps also to be there fore our pleasure, then I (maybe wrongly) assumed that we would be able to search for and join gameplay in all the environments from within the same single game entity on our new-gen consoles.  I totally get your frustration if that is now not going to be the case, as the new-gen consoles are indeed sparse on SSD space so far on their primary drives...

Already now with just a few games installed, its literally full, so think next investment will have to be a large secondary SSD drive to be attached to it.  As then you can install the game quickly from secondary to primary drive.   Not ideal really, but its the best workaround so far, until Sony come clear on what alternative larger SSD drives we can install ourselves as primaries...

    No @RNM4010028 ,

Because the game was not developed with cross-play in mind.

    But, more importantly...

Because the PS3 was built using "Cell CPU architecture" which, when taken in tandem with a bundle of many other proprietary components Sony used for it, it meant that the PS4 could not play PS3 games straight out of the box.  The PS4 and PS4 Pro by comparison use a lot of 'standard' off the shelf PC parts, whereas the PS3 did not.

Hence reason why PS3 games simply did not work on PS4.

Later Sony enabled some level of backward compatibility with the 'PlayStation Now' service which allowed you to stream PS3 gameplay to your PS4.  Actually because Sony had a number of PS3s hooked up to a server and then that server streams the game to you in a video stream. You then interact with that game using your controller and the video stream returns to the server to let it know that an interaction has taken place, before firing back the response to the player.  But the quality of the stream and the responsiveness of it both entirely depend on the quality of your internet connection and honestly it was miserable for a first person shooter game like Battlefield.

Just curious, for sure this is an option, but what would be the downside that I'm missing please?

If I get to also cross-play with PS5/PC players, wouldn't that mean that lobbies would be more full?

Just wondering why turning it off would be an option. 🤔

EDIT: Unless it's because there may be more cheating on PC platform, if I have that right?

Yes, too many cheaters on PC for my liking.

    Several good reasons @SofaJockeyUK ,

As mentioned here above by @OskooI_007 already.

Next to this, also several gameplay advantages that many console players perceive that the PC players have while we on console do not.  To mention just a few but important ones:

    • The PC players do all by default typically use the m&k for controls controls (while yes, the PC player could also employ a game controller.  Or likewise a console player could attach and utilize a m&k setup also).  But fact is that the m&k mode setup and utilized for the gameplay in its native PC environment makes it much faster and more precise to aim and keep perfect aim on enemies compared to using joysticks for this on the controller.
    • The PC players have a much higher FPS rate versus console players.  And we are restricted by this, while you on PC have the option to install latest high performing graphic card and processor while we do not.  So you have much quicker screen updates and more precise game movements to use for your targeting of enemies.
    • The PC players have the option to change and customize the graphic settings you have access to on the PCs.  We do not have that option, aka like making near field items very clear and detailed, while smearing out or even blurring less important background that are further away.  So on PC you get a much quicker and better view on moving enemies, vehicles etc..

So now you also know why most YouTube first person shooter bloggers typically are showing their amazing skills while playing on PC and not using consoles...  :o)

Ditto but rather it was 'opt in' by default but Beggars can't be choosers.....

Hey all, so just to clear up any misunderstandings (there seem to be some rumblings on Twitter), while PC and next-gen console can opt-out of cross-play, there is not going to be an option for next-gen console cross-play only: it will be all (PC, Xbox, and PS) or just your console brand if you choose to opt out

Hmmm, crossplay does sound intuitively appealing, but yes, I can see some of the downsides. 🤔

I personally would have liked a Playstation and Xbox only crossplay option, and when it's off it's just PS4 and PS5.

Its gonna be the FIRST option i turn off!

Now all i want is the option to turn off M&K and controller cross-play. Hopefully this will be baked in anyways.

I just want a completely even environment...i dont want/need any advantages to have fun.
