Own vs Subcription

What's the difference between owning a game or subscribing to EA Play (or Gamepass) infinitely?

I ask this, especially for BF 2042. It's free with EA Play right now but will it stay free? Is it limited-time or forever free with EA Play?

Thanks.

  • Hi there, @hacklesz

    Games come and go from EA Play and we normally announce in advance when a game is leaving. When a game is removed from EA Play, it is no longer playable without being purchased.

    It will remain free until EA/DICE decides to remove it from the play list. Could be forever though.

    You're very welcome. If you have any other issues or questions, let us know. Good luck on the battlefield!

  • I have the XBox Super Mega Game Pass Ultra Plus Pro ™ ® © ℗ (I am guessing this is what it will be called by 2030!)

    So, BF2042 is available "free".

    However, as a developer myself (not gaming related), I know how much work goes into developing even the simplest things... never mind the complex things;

    So, I purchased the game.

    • Even if it only adds a tiny amount of available funds for continued development of the game, a lot of tiny amounts add up.
    • Sure, EA gets their cut, but can't do anything about that.
    • I equate it to buying a music "album" (Physical CD or iTunes. Say what you may about Apple and it's 30% cut (app store, don't know their cut of music purchases, but I feel safe saying they still take a cut.) I use them because... well... Apple is not going to disappear from the market, leaving you with purchases you can no longer use.).... the actual performing artists only get a tiny percentage of the purchase price, but artists should be paid for their work.
    • If only music bands and game developers had an easy to use "Buy Me A Beer" button, so they get the sales dollars directly.

    Actually, for music purchases, I try to buy through the Bands' website/stores - they tend to get a little bigger cut of the monies spent, if you buy via their links to iTunes (or whomever you use)

  • Always own, never subscribe. Nothing is ever 'free' and you won't get anything back when they delist it.
