You are also very exposed on some of the flags.
I think there's a distinction between vehicle and infantry focussed maps evident in Battlefield games for a long time - some maps have always been vehicle-oriented, and this necessitates a change in approach for groundpounders. Some maps have always been infantry-focussed, while others offer a mix.
For instance, in BFV, Al Sundan was self-evidently a vehicle map due to the sheer size of it. Panzerstorm gives the game away with its name. The same is true in BF1 and even BF4 and BF3.
We've had (not an exhaustive list):
Infantry-oriented/-only maps:
- Metro
- Argonne Forest
- Seine Crossing
- Al Marj Encampment
- Operation Underground
- Grand Bazaar
- Operation Locker
- The whole Close Quarters expansion for BF3
Armour/Vehicle-oriented:
- Breakaway
- Hourglass (although hat tipped to A1/A2/A3 for infantry)
- Al Sundan
- Panzerstorm
- The whole Armoured Kill expansion for BF3
- Golmud Railway
- Dragon Valley 2015
- Altai Range
I think that with 2042, the developers felt that the maps were large enough to accommodate the playstyle distinctions in one map. Hourglass is a good example of this (as is Orbital) - there are flags where you could, I guess, try to attack with a tank but you're just going to die quickly (A1,A2 and A3). On the other hand, there are flags where infantry go when they want a 72mm anti-personnel rocket crammed up their jacksie - C1, D1 and B1. I think that many people who complain about bad map design and lack of cover don't appreciate this point.
So yeah, you're super exposed as infantry on D1 and C1 on Breakaway. There's a reason for that and an appropriate course of action to take in response.
I will definitely be steering clear of those flags you mentioned where you get a a72mm anti-personnel rocket crammed up your jacksie, definitely not my idea of fun. 🙂
