Portal Rules Editor Guide Request

A long time BF fan since 1942.

One of the best experinces with the BF community came with the release of the half baked BF2 Editor that DICE released for us to totally mod the Python based games. While not a perfect tool it allowed for some very imperssive work from the community. Then they moved to Frostbyte and no more tools. I think the Star Wars mod was the most creative and it was fun to play. They used BF2142 as the base because the walkers were already in the code.

When 2042 was released I did not purchase the game as it strayed too far from the roots of the franchise. Picked up the game a month ago and have enjoyed playing as the game does have that BF feel that was missing for me with BF1 and BFV. Returning to the standard class system was nice to see. Team squads us to be six men not four. I think they made a mistake by  reducing the classes and squad count over time (but needed for consoles I guess). A game that is a clone of BF called Hell Let Loose actually has 8 classes to choose from in a six man squad. Teamwork is needed in HLL, something that the Bf community use to be good at.

I totally forgot about the hype about the Portal at release. It sounded promising then and with recent updates has immense potential. Building a quick Portal mod is very simple unless you want to dig into the Rules Editor. If you are a programmer then I would assume YOU understand all the principles of using the code structure in Portal. But some of us are a bit thicker in the head and need a bit of help and examples of the basics as well as more complex arguments would be greatly appreciated.

A few people have started making videos of how they program through the Portal Rules editor such as BattlefieldDad (check out his Youtube). Other very creative programmers include Mancour and The Ozzy to name a few. They have shown what is possible with some creativity and look forward to more. Check out the Rules created for the Frontlines 2042 in Portal, I was blown away by some of the arguments he used and trying to wrap my head around them.

Some clever Portal Designs are emerging right now;

When the BF2 Editor was released the BF community eagerly jumped in and also helped one another. I have no hope that EA or DICE would spend any resources on an examples based guide regarding Portal. That, like the BF2 Editor, is up to the community. The more educated the community becomes with Portal the greater chance for DICE to improve upon Portal. That's a simple business decision, if Portal draws no users then EA won't spend another penny on it.

Portal will only get better in conjunction with the BF community as we did in the past;

A good start for Portal Coding Examples;

If EA and DICE see a potential interest from us, then maybe they will give us a bit more to play with. While Portal is cool right now, it could be so much more if we work together as the BF community once did in the past.

We no longer have the ability to play with the Frostbite engine as we did Python. These guys did such a great mod that DICE paid for a trip for the creators to visit the studio in Sweden.

  • @BuddaSD30Hi mate,
    I’ve been messing with the rules editor for nearly a year. I had to fumble my way through it as there are no guides or help provided by dice or the EA guys on here.
    I was a complete novice and didn’t understand much of it at first.
    But I know my way around the rules editor enough now and I have some pretty cool stuff baked into my servers.
    There is still a lot in the rules editor that I haven’t dabbled with very much so I know there is more that can be done.

    I strongly advise you join the BF discord.
    Ozzy and the gang are present there always and very helpful when you need it. They’ve helped me a ton when I’ve needed it.
    I’m certainly willing to help out whenever I can too. Those guys do some really tricky stuff, but I’m proficient enough with the rules editor to be able to provide help.

    If you want help or advice with portal or the rules editor, then this isn’t the place for it.
    Sadly, it still seems that not a lot of people know about portal, use it, or are aware of what can be done with the rules editor.

    You’ll get zero help from the EA guys on here, so don’t expect any replies from them.

    Join the discord.
    We’re always present on there and support is in good supply 👍🏼

    @creepnpeepThank you for directing me to the right place for help! Look, I'm old, have heard of Discord but not used it yet. Will get on there soon.

    I think Portal was lost on the die hard BF community due to the initial changes with 2042 at release. It turned so many of us off that Portal got lost in the mess.

    The Portal Rules Editor is actually an amazing tool and DICE needs to do more to promote it as the potential is unreal for modding.

    Is there a specific server they are using on Discord, not sure how to find them unless its a direct friend request.

    Thanks

    @BuddaSD30Ozzy pointed me in the direction of the discord a couple times. I stalled, because I hadn’t used it either. And I’m getting old too 😂. But it’s fine mate. There are a ton of helpful guys on there that actually reply within a year unlike this forum (sadly).

    Head over there mate. You’ll soon be hooked on making and developing your own servers and game mode. You can really make the game feel bespoke

  • Hi Budda: Like you I've slowly becoming more familiar with the rules editor. However, I just vapor-locked. I was hoping you might have some advice. On the rules editor screen there is 3 half-lit buttons in the lower right corner. A plus sign, a minus sign for increasing and decreasing the view of the entire mod block. Then there is a 3rd button, a circle within a circle and 4 points. What is that button? I accidently hit that button and all the work in the mod block just disappeared. And I have no idea where it went. The server still works so I know the code is still there, somewhere. When I restart the rules editor it's a blank screen now. Any thoughts? Thanks Budda

    Hi @Confuzzo I'm going to close this thread as it hasn't been active for over a year, but please feel free to start a new thread - I'm sure there'll be a few people who may be able to help.
