I guess we'll find out in the next few weeks.
Whether it's an excuse for veterans or a well thought mode, it's up for debate.
I like what I see in Portal, especially the detailed options.
And as far as I can see, the main game mode is not appealing to anyone other than Apex and Warzone loving peeps.
So let's see.- 4 years ago
I still think that EA consider Portal as the cornerstone platform for all Battlefield games going forward in this franchise!
In principle you always have the Portal as the base, also for all future BF game releases. You simply just add more content, more BF variants to the Portal library.
And any special Portal server that grabs more attention than others will be copied by EA and moved across as a fixed server option in the core section. EA can then also on an ongoing basis add new stuff to the Portal area in incremental updates, while also discontinuing content that is no longer used much and phase it out...
Maps, time eras or fantasy universes, soldiers, skins., weapons, vehicles, gadgets. It all fits in and can be added or removed as they feel like.
Also reason why a longer while back, we expected this game simply to have been named BATTLEFIELD.
The mother of all !
But then the Battle Royal money-machines, like Apex Legend, Fortnite and PUBG distracted the focus and prioritization of EA Leadership in spring 2019... COD Warzone further made EA blink more than twice, EA changed course and the thing became BF2042 with Hazard Zone Specialists...

So let's see. There is no debate, the sophistication that comes with Portal clearly indicates that this wasn’t a side gig that dice cooked up to shut people up. It is something with much more longevity than we might think.
@CyberDyme mentioned something critical on how EA will benefit from our time in portal. The trial and error in experiences, the rise and fall of servers, and many other things will aid DICE in developing the franchise. They will get to understand market needs and balanced game mechanics on demand. At it’s full potential, it might even lower future development costs.
Portal is DICE/EA’s Trojan horse in the industry that can explode with innovation, battlefield portal spin-offs, and more. In my humble opinion of course.

I'd argue portal is Dice not being completely looney and realizing the specialist concept is a big gamble, and portal is a failsafe and not a "love letter", just someone going "this is a pretty big gamble, and we can offset it".
*If* portal turns out to be more successful, i suspect we'll see an expanded portal mode as the core for the next game and new game types being relegated to second billing rather than how core is marketed for this title.
Either way, we won't know much of anything until the game has launched and we've had a good amount of time to judge core and see what the metrics look like between modes, first few months are going to be a honeymoon period no matter how long-term viable portal or core is.
