I said this in another post:
IDK man, the more I look into portal the more worried I get. You can't use the rule editor for conquest or rush, only tdm/ffa. There's no breakthrough gamemode for portal and you can't mix different game equipment. So I can't use 2042 weapons with bf3 classes. If I want to play classes, I'm limited to the weapons they added for that game, which isn't much individually. I think they added 1 sniper from bf3..
I like BF2042 and I'm also very happy to see what's coming with the Portal mode. My main concern is that Portal will be main place where all players be, I'm afraid that at one moment when I want to play BF2042 I won't find games there as everyone will be on Portal and that's actually sad. I really hope that I'm wrong and players will give their time and attention to standard Battlefield 2042 as well as Portal mode.
We finally getting modern combat Battlefield after so many years and honestly I don't want to see BF2042(I mean standard modes, not Portal) dead because everyone plays Portal.
- Fringerunner4 years agoSeasoned Ace@IIPrest0nII Is standard mode dead if portal is successful and core is successful though? I mean, portal or core, it's still battlefield, just with fundamentally different soldier concepts.
While i don't want either to fail as such, i know i want one of them to succeed more than the other, but i also don't "hate" what the specialists bring to the table.
I'm simply not a fan of specialists in stock battlefield, everything they do could have been done with the old "you're one of many" system but throwing specialist gadgets/abilities in via a new gadget slot, but i think we have what we're getting for a reason.
I do think specialists make 100% sense in HZ, and zero issues with them in that context, but i certainly don't want HZ to be the direction for the franchise going forward either, I'd rather they spin it off to it's own game like warzone for CoD, but Dice went all in and threw it all into one package, probably causing the bleed-over of specialists into core BF (and probably with full intent to make HZ more tempting to try by stuffing the specialists into core)
Without linking HZ to core, they'd have a fresh game without a fanbase and they don't own a clancy license, so it'd be "just" another modern-based shooter royale variant (i know it's more tarkov meets dark zone from divsion meets showdown) in a saturated market with no established fanbase to help prop up the numbers at the start.
After seeing the portal drop that opinion has gained a bit more traction for me, if i was forced to guess portal was the result of the internal dialogue about the direction of the game from those who didn't wan to to risk the franchise on a complete refit, and HZ is probably a combination of a deal to use the BF franchise name for a new concept that ended up needing more "backing" and as such, the great experiment began, and i think portal is the result of internal division about taking the game in the direction we see now.
Complete and utter speculation mind you, and though i would love to know if this speculation is somewhere near the truth i doubt we'll get a clear answer.
If we want to spin this in a positive light rather than the standard dislike for specialists in core/dislike for old classes division though, we ended up (seemingly, hard to say for sure until launch) getting both worlds instead of just one or the other, and i think that was a very good idea from Dice (or whichever studio pushed for the inclusion of portal).
I also don't think core/HZ tanking will kill the franchise at all, i think that'll only be a possible outcome if *all* modes tank completely, something i don't think will happen.
Though i think it a lot more likely that HZ will get a standalone client that'll go F2P at some point if it turns out to have enough traction on it's own. - 4 years ago

The funny thing here @IIPrest0nII
Is that EVERYTHING in BF2042 could and should be "Portal" !
You can also in the Portal already now here from onset setup all the core BF2042 in the Portal area. We dont need a separate section for this. Matter of fact EA have already stated that they will observe what server designs will be most popular in the Portal area and then actually port them across and set them up as standard servers in the core area. That is how I think we should start to think about the Core area and the Portal area.
They are not against each other. Its not one trying to dominate or exclude the other. On the contrary!
The Portal area gives us now the sandbox and the full toolbox in our hands to experiment with all the game mechanics and parameters. So we will in principle now crowd-source R&D next game developments for EA!
We can in relative short time try out thousands of various options/designs and test it with hundred of thousands of players worldwide. While in old times, we had to wait many many months between each game update and DLC release from EA, who only had a small community to test it on before releasing it to the big market. Now we can test it big-scale from the get go.
That is why the Portal is true genius from the EA game design team!
They give us the tools.
And we do the continuous R&D and testing for them to find the perfect settings! 😀👍
Essentially (and what EA wants) is that "Portal" = "BATTLEFIELD" !
And what we will find in the Core section is the 'all time favorites' for most players globally.

@CyberDyme On cussing point broski!
- 4 years ago@IIPrest0nII I feel sad too but it is what it is. The standard mode is already hated by a lot. Unless they make proper changes, I doubt anyone will be playing them in the long run.
- Fringerunner4 years agoSeasoned Ace@TheFireOfTitan Is it though? Again, I'm absolutely in the "not a fan of the specialists in BF" camp, but i certainly don't hate it (hard to hate something i haven't really played) and i'll absolutely be giving core a good run before i fully make my mind up.
The nice thing now though (imo) is that *if* it does turn out i don't like the specialist system much, not only can i fall back to a portal server with a title i absolutely loved (BF3) but i can also mix and match elements from both core and the other games in to maybe even make a BF3 "remix" with some gadgets and guns from other games to make it even more interesting, or just see what combos other people have come up with.
Core will fail or succeed entirely on it's own merit, not because HZ or portal is also in the mix, and i highly doubt preconceptions will make much of a difference after launch.
It certainly won't fail solely because some of us didn't like the specialists in tests/beta, it'll be entirely based on if it manages to feel like it's own game and has a semblance of balance in the BF franchise context.
If it just feels like a washed out jumble of other games then that's on the content, not preconceptions.
The only major issue i see core having vs portal is that portal can mix up it's content to a huge degree without Dice needing to do any work (as cyberdyme mentioned above) whereas core will require Dice/whatever studio does content post launch to put in a bit of effort.
And adding content to portal is more or less porting existing assets and maybe polishing them up a bit, which i would think would make it a simpler mode to support if it's popular.
(and coming up with new specialists that people care about will get harder and harder the more time passes imo)- 4 years ago@Fringerunner I don't hate the specialists. Just certain small things about the way they are. That's my issue. Like certain abilities, balance issues, skin issues. Ammo, medic, etc, markers on top of them.
Small things.
I will play all of the modes but Portal will be my favourite, I already know.
And that is true, people will judge main mode on its merit.
