I wonder if it's simply that more people buy digital, it's less fuss to distribute digitally and game sizes are outpacing disk formats anyway (you need multiple disks or have to download most of the game anyway).
I think the last physical game I bought was 2013 and have to say i personally don't miss them. 🙂

It's more about the ownership, that's physical games to console gamers, I myself haven't bought a disc on PC in years mostly because it's completely useless when you still have to link it online and stuff like that, I just get my games off GOG mostly and put them on my external hard drives, can play offline anytime without any restrictions. I do agree that a disc for a game like this is completely useless if you can't play in LAN or with bots offline (which hopefully will be added later).
