I wanted to stay out of this discussion because I don't feel BF2042 has done anything special. I really think the series has been degraded since BF4, no more rental servers, no more squad features, single player "Lone wolf mentality" the netcode is a mess and nothing that builds a community.
All missing.
I do like the plus system, so there is that.

BF2042 things I like compared to previous entries
1. I enjoy the increased player count to 128 player even though I can understand how quite a lot of people prefer 64 players. I think the increased player count was long overdue even though a lot of the original maps didn't handle it correctly.
2. AI, whilst a lot of people complain about AI, it helps a lot in regions with less players when you aren't playing at peak time. Also being able to play custom games in portal with AI is great. I just wish portal had more content / features
3. Portal - an excellent addition which needs more maps and a few more features.
If they allowed weapons / vehicles to be mixed between factions, added some skins for players and vehicles for different eras - ie Vietnam, BF2,
added more maps, added all maps / map variants to custom conquest, and provided a framework in the logic editor to modify the properties of individual weapons and vehicles,
ie - damage / health / lock on speed / splash damage area / rate of fire , etc Then we would be able to make basic mods rather than just custom game modes.
Other things I'd like to see are
Ability to turn off ziplines, repelling lines from maps.
Ability to disable parachute, for individual classes and pilots.
Ability to turn on capture points from other game modes in logic editor (ie so for example in Exposure I can turn on the tunnel flag for 64 players on the 128 player game mode).
Ability to place items in portal - currently we can place MCOM stations, it would be great if this was expanded to items / objects in general - ie flags, spawn points, capture boundaries ,destroyed cars, sandbags, buildings - we can figure out the co-ordinates in game so a map editor isn't needed.
4. Plus system - its a pretty good addition.
5. Additional seats in vehicles having something to do - ie the main battle tank having 4 seats now instead of 2.
Things I prefer from previous games
1. Maps in general from most of the other games are more varied, and there is less of a disconnection between spaces. Also, whilst previous games recycled a lot of things between maps, at least they were generally houses / city buildings, so we got a lot of nice destructible urban environments with most buildings being between 1 - 4 stories.
In BF2042 a lot of the maps have an industrial facility or something industry related as the centre point - Orbital, Spearhead, Renewal, Flashpoint, Manifest, Breakaway... the list goes on.
As a result we end up with a lot of maps with a bunch of warehouses, shipping containers, site offices, pipes, tanks / silos.
2. Sniper gunplay seems much better in previous games, probably due to servers in older games being at a higher tick rate. In previous games it was quite easy to get headshots on running enemies, in BF2042 I can barely ever hit someone running with a sniper.
3. Gadget variety - previous games had more gadgets
4. Vehicles - being able to cycle weapon types in vehicles - ie multiple tank shell types, optics, Vehicles not being shared between factions, Vehicles having more defined purposes - for example AA vehicles in previous games were pretty much always AA, whereas in BF2042 the main AA vehicle - the wildcat might be set up with unlocks that make it useless for AA.
Vehicles being able to change their role / be multi-role can be good, but sometimes it can be detrimental - especially when the vehicle is core to the rock paper scissor gameplay with other vehicle types.
5. Naval combat
6. More types of vehicles - ie ground attack plane - ie A10 / SU25, light transport with bullet proof windows - HMMV / Vodnik,
7. Appearance / aesthetics - uniforms for each faction, war torn appearance of maps, not seeing clones everywhere
8. Destruction in general
9. Server browser, squad management, commander,
10. Immersive gameplay - BF2042 just has more ridiculous stuff going on its harder to be immersed. For example wingsuits, zip lines, repelling ropes, grappling hook - all these things are done in a rather silly way. The actual gameplay using them is fine, but having a map covered with ziplines, clones wing suiting off 3m high containers, and Mackay ninja roping around makes me think of GI Joe. These things can still exist in Battlefield and can be cool gameplay features but I'd prefer them to be more tactical and nuanced than making the game feel like Apex Legends.
A good example of how to do this right is BF2 special forces - ziplines are a gadget, you use a crossbow to shoot the zipline and then you set up the mounting where you shot from. You can only travel downhill on the zipline.
Another example from BF2 special forces is the repelling rope, also a gadget, you can throw it anywhere, has an arc similar to throwing the grenade so you could get it to hook onto the tops of buildings / cliffs, and the rope would remain there for other players to use until destroyed / despawn some time after player death.
I imagine if we were to apply the same line of thinking to the wingsuit you would need to be much higher above ground before deploying.
11. Teamplay vs lone wolf mentality - previous games rewarded teamplay better with xp for squad orders and unlocks (apart from assignments) based around class xp / level xp rather than kills.
- SCUBASTEVE1203 years agoSeasoned Ace@Ga-Knomboe_Boy all very good points I really like your point on vehicles from past games. They felt more refined and played a role. Plus 2042 gives same and equal amount of vehicles on every map. For example on renewal the greener side with office building has the map advantage, therefore take a tank or wildcat slot away from that team since they already have a slight edge. It also makes it much more predictable what each team has in terms of vehicles.
I too miss the old map styles I think you put it perfectly and you have helped me understand why the maps are like they are with basically no destruction. We need rural and urban maps with houses, communities, and townships.
Also 2042 is very difficult to get immerged in
- SCUBASTEVE1203 years agoSeasoned Ace@sk1lld Your response is greatly welcomed. I like the praise and criticism. I also feel this is a huge downgrade from past titles. I just wanted to hear everyone else thoughts on why they make like this game (or not 🙂
