In my case it's a combination of both, and like you I have not felt the urge to play the game much recently.
Compared to previous BF's when I had to drag myself away at times, with BF2042 I am having to make the effort to play.
Pretty sad to see the BF series go downhill so rapidly. ☹️
I feel that DICE believes it is the old school holding them back, I've played the series 20 years now since BF1942. It's my belief that it was us "Old schoolers" that made the series, that without us the series will die. Everything that was fun in Battlefield has been removed IMHO only the name remains. There will be no more pre orders from me and any future purchases will need to be proved "BEFORE" I buy any Battlefield games.
If I wanted a Battle Royal, I would purchase one.

I'm "old school" too I guess, I started with BF1942 myself and I can wholeheartedly agree with everything you posted, I won't be pre-ordering the next title and will "wait and see" what they're actually releasing.
Just because Vince Zampella goes out and does an interview that acknowledges how far this title missed the mark, doesn't mean they're gonna get the choo-choo back on the tracks.
They burned a lot of trust with the initial BF2042 core design decisions (no class structure/no server browser/no squad management/no voip/no scoreboard etc. etc.) and the utter lack of effort that they seem willing to put forth to fixing it isn't helping.

You add the lack of engagement with a zero hype strategy is just baffling. If you haven't seen what the other game is doing today, check it out. Proximity chat, advanced movements, gunsmith. The other games innovate and give the player base a glimpse of what is to come. We can't even get patch notes more than a day before the patch. Our best source for updates is a data miner. Pretty unbelievable and extremely disappointing.
