Re: Adding classes and teamwork

@NazT55What's in the game to motivate teamwork? Nothing besides the will to win. People are doing their own thing, and that's totally fine. Longest they're doing something that contributes to the team in some way. I don't think we're ever going to see tight teamwork from a bunch of randoms. You have to group up to do that, but that can definitely kill the game too.

I played in a Clan in BF4 for a couple of weeks and they would just completely pub stomp. It didn't feel right and it was the most boring thing I experienced while playing that game. I'm the type that would switch to the losing side on Metro just for the challenge. That's a lot more fun to me.

The game is designed to be pretty casual with some of, if not, the best FPS mechanics of any current shooter.

BFV had the Squad leader that could gain points by giving orders and your squad for following them. The reward was being able to call in strikes or vehicles. That felt fun and rewarding. I always preferred being the Squad lead in that game.

There's no direct path for a reward in 2042 for good teamwork. So you either play the way that you want or you get some satisfaction from winning and being a good teammate.

I just feel like they need to progress the game and figure out a way to give it persistence. Join a faction and have seasons of trying to conquer a map or something?

@RaginSam While its probably always existed, I feel there's lot more of a cultural influence these days for people to just lone wolf it, especially if they're streaming or making clips for vids, and the top Youtuber crop frequently do the same thing for hits and likes. Teamplay is rarely pushed by those players, and they influence others to do the same. Teamplay has been dropping off pretty steadily since the BF3 days, when BF started appealing to a wider audience.

I'm not sure why things have changed, or if they actually have, but it does feel that way to me. I've changed though too. I've experienced games a certain way and now I'm looking for something new, exciting, and a little innovative. Battlefield has been doing pretty much the same thing now forever. The game play and design have been refined over the years, but fundamentally the basics are the same.

I want Dice, or whoever, to take the engine, game mechanics, and try to make new experiences. Hazard Zone wasn't a terrible idea at all, the timing and implementation probably were a little off though. I would definitely try to play it more now if I could actually get into a round. When trying to learn the game and get better at it, then adding a whole new mode on top of that, it's a little overwhelming. That's why I don't think it was the best decision to release Hazard Zone at launch with the rest of the game.

Influencer's and Content creators are definitely contributing to the overall negativity towards lots of different games. While some of it is definitely valid, they're also looking for controversy, something to grab your attention with click bait, so that they can get clicks on their videos for revenue. Also, like you said, they're playing the game for clips rather than teamwork. At least in games like Battlefield.

While I still definitely try to win and get annoyed when losing a round, I'm also kinda bored of it. I can play optimally to try and win every match, but a lot of times now I don't feel like playing in that very specific way just to win. I play Battlefield because I love the movement mechanics, sound design, art design, gun play, and the ability to play the game in different ways. I'd just like to see more motivation for winning. I'd like to see people on their iPads giving orders, "Commanders", on a pivotal battle to gain territory on a larger tiled map.

What is the point of winning in Battlefield? What's the motive in game design to be a team player?

I started playing BF2042 again today after 12 months away.

If they hadn’t added classes, I wouldn’t even have considered playing 2042 again, regardless of the nice map revamps etc.

Playing as Falck I revived and used health pistol a lot btw.

DICE conditions and selects the playerbase for over a year on how to play selfishly with the design of BF2042 specialists and "hero shooter" focus. Then DICE finally wedges in some form of a class system. I don't think anyone should expect this is going to work out the way they planned.

This is like letting your dog * in the house its whole life and then getting upset when they don't go outside.

Its fine if you are in a premade group on comms. Anything else is now worse, becuase you have too many people that don't want to, or don't understand the need, or how to coordinate proper teamplay. So for those that do understand, they now have many less tools to accomplish the task.

I assume DICE is gambling that people will eventually adjust and maybe some of the class-centric players return. I will not hold my breath.

@RaginSam I genuinely liked the Specialist idea for 2042, and being this group with different abilities and the freedom to use any and all equipment if you wanted to. I also liked Firestorm, and Hazard Zone was pretty fun and different in the few times I could play it. Sadly, we cannot have anything different. We saw this when people were screaming about wanting just a BF4 remake, then that they didn't get enough 'new' content. These same people wanted a remake of an old game, and also wanted the old maps into the rotation, along with old guns.

People complain about cosmetic items, but they'll run the blingiest of bling weapon or character skins if they can. Complain about weapon selection, but they'll use one or two. Complain about clone characters, but wanted a game that only had four characters per faction. People are never happy, and we've seen this in previous titles where the dev team is being pulled all over the place listening to more influential community members who complain about one thing, then complain about it when its changed, or straight up just don't play it.

I see it more and more among the Youtubers where they hate on something for clout, then praise it for clout, then hate on it, then praise it, and their play styles are constantly geared toward trying to get clips for vids instead of genuine teamwork. I played a Portal mode set up by one for a while, and while it was pretty fun at first, it turned into this slogfest because they wouldn't alter the formula, and it became clearer it was just a means for them to set up clips for vids. They never once participated in anything teamwork related (I would sometimes fly helicopters or VTOLs and try to get them to an objective, but they'd instantly jump so they could to C5 kill something). They'd never wait for a revive, or give ammo, or revive. It was just lone wolfing start to finish. At one point they just killed the server for the night because they were having a bad experience (I watched their vid after where they had played in the same server). So nobody else could play it.

Its a selfish streak that seems to be pretty prevalent nowadays. Back in BF3 especially, I used to run with a small group of players (but also randoms would participate) by getting the Littlebird and making drop runs onto flags with them. I'd do it with the Venom as well, and I try to do it with the Condor and Hind in 2042. But most of the time people won't spawn on you, or they spawn just to sit in the helo and take up a gun space, and never shoot at anything. Vast majority of the time nobody will spawn on an MAV either. I haven't witnessed anyone running repair tools on vehicles since the update despite it being part of the kit.

I appreciate updates and changes to the maps to make them more intricate and interesting, but other stuff, DICE really needs to stop listening to certain players, because they'll end up crashing the game into the ground eventually pulling it every which way.

@Moab23 It's hard to be creative when every time you try to be there's backlash from a big part of the community. I feel the same as you. I don't want another BF4, I've played it for many hours already and it was a great game.

I wish more developers had a clear vision of what they wanted to make and stuck to it. Find that passion again and be a little innovative. Dice tried with the Specialist, but obviously that didn't go well. I think players really need to be a little more flexible and let developers try different things. Give them room to be human and experiment a bit.

Youtubers like jackfrags, brokenmachine and levelcap dont care about the game.  They are all about that youtube money.  Maybe they were at one time but now it is all about getting that click for the advert money.  I can only think of one youtuber that genuinely tries to help players of battlefield.  The rest just want the money and /or are toxic as hell (silk) and intentionally ruin the game for people and try to clear out servers.
