Re: Current Issues In The Studio

@Adamonic Exactly :D

As working in audio, dev cycle for this is a bit later in stage for games, exception to this is temp stuff that needs to be done either for testing purposes or new systems. But yea they moved on right after ship, which isnt really normal. Im not sure how DICE does it, usually there is quite a bit of teams working on DLC afterwards. And tech engineers for the engine usually start to move onto the next project, but if the entire main studio in Sweden is moved onto the next project, it gives a grim reality of what content will be coming.

There wont be a lot of content, especially if a support studio (DICE LA) is just the only one doing it. They first have to fix the current issues, before any big content comes out. Which if is true for a 2023 release for the next battlefield, we wont get any new content besides season one. Even though they stated 4 seasons. But as you said only a handful of dev's. Which is a grim reality both for 2042 and the next game. If it is taking this long for map reworks im afraid of the next game maps, which may as well be polish turds compared to 2042's. A map rework shouldnt happen at this late of stage of the games life cycle, should of been caught in dev time. Most likely the landscape is art locked and probably wont be unlocked for any major changes besides capture points.

    This is an issue that's been speculated about a lot, but gets more confirmed as time goes on.

    Can Dice create a battlefield game that meets the expectations of a battlefield game?

    Every time Dice fail to meet expectations it becomes a little more easy to feel they're simply incapable. That they're not being lazy, or *, but that what's being asked from them is very hard for them.  There's no sense of them exceeding expectations, of Dice feeling they have to make up for the state of the game at launch. It's as if all they think it really needs is a bit of polish, and that 2042 is not a game built on some fundamentally flawed concepts.

    All of which makes looking forward to any future battlefield game an exercise in managing anxiety.

    I have to say, as things stand, I cant buy any further games from Dice until they've been released and I can tell if they're close to what was promised.

    Amateur, outside opinion but like...honestly as time goes on and we have more and more reports from teams working with the Frostbite engine...I'm thinking a LOT of the problems are down to the Frostbite engine simply being a nightmare to work with and not setting the studio up for success. But sadly, EA is unlikely to abandon their investment at this point with some big sunk-cost-fallacy thinking, even if it would very likely dramatically improve the quality of games their studios make.

    Just look at Respawn, they're turning out bangers and have a $1B a year game (Apex) and they use Source and Unreal Engine. Maybe the devs need better tools to make a good game, but management continues to force them to use a chainsaw to try to do detailed woodwork with.

    @edgecrusherO0 Frostbite engine is difficult, but from what I understand is those who could run Frostbite and had decades of experience jumped ship early in development wisely, when they seen the direction was to fast follow other battle royale games and thus destroy the original battlefield legacy. For example, who would think it wise to place a grapple hooking pathfinder from Apex into a Battlefield game, we have mackay grappling hook fantasy "specialist" BF, why not just add butterfly wings and glitter while we are at it...HA

    My basic summary of BF 2042....Dice suits lied to EA suits about how the product was both one track and would bring in tons more money by turning BF into an Apex/Fortnite mutation. Dice suits lied so well EA suits believed the fairy tale. The bottom 99% worker drones at EA and Dice had to sacrifice their existence for 12-18 months to get BF released on time. Dice and EA suits probably got promoted so they could do less damage next time. Worker drones are looking for other jobs and now taking ulcer medications...and I'm sure they avoid the forums as most seem to blame the worker drones and not the suits that had made all the completely illogical and destructive decisions that puts the future of BF legacy in question...

    And the future of BF...the fact the suits released 3-6 months before finished, in order to maximize short term profits while destroying morale for the worker drones. The suits have to know they sacrificed the franchise long term so I'd say we would be lucky to see another BF in the future.

    Dice and other EA studios (Bioware) has talked about Frostbite being hard to work with many times in the past.

    Seems like that they have spent way too much time on engine-features, but "forgot" to make proper tools for making the process of creating new content easier. BF games has earlier been some of the most beautiful looking multiplayer games no doubt, but has always had lots of small issues.

    If they want any chance of running a live-service, they have to make sure that as much time as possible is spent creating content, instead of wasting time using a game-engine that demands usage of "voodoo".

    Perhaps Dice Sweden should use all their time developing Frostbite and then some other studio could create the BF-games, they seem to not being able to do both. Seems like making quality game-play is totally lost on Dice Sweden.
