Re: DICE abandoning 128p maps beyond S1?

@Trokey66 DICE marketed this game on 128p. I bought this game for 128p breakthrough.

Why would current data be suggesting players prefer 64p? Possibly due to the lack of players to consistently fill 128p modes? Could it be due to terrible map design and layouts for 128p modes?

No, clearly not, I guess.

I paid for a game based off the premise of large-scale warfare with 128p modes. If DICE remove that then they've literally removed the main reason why I purchased the game. Which they've more than half accomplished by completely removing 128p breakthrough.

At least HZ still exists, even if DICE have said they're abandoning further development on it.

DICE just out there cutting support for content without committing to delivering more on what little content they are still supporting.

    Also mentioned on XBox Wire:

    https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2022/06/07/first-details-battlefield-2042-season-1-zero-hour/

"The most dramatic change will be the size of these battles. The team will be moving away from the 128-player game modes, electing to enhance the current maps and development of future maps for 64 players. The 128-player game modes will still be available on the original launch maps, but not on any future maps starting in Season 2."

So they are killing 128 after Season 1. Lovely. At least they are not being passive about killing the game off now.

    Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback Since the Launch on map size and player count, recently with today's Patch there seems to be slight confusion around maps and player size going forward. I wanted to add a comment from the Community Managers around this.

For clarification, you may have seen posts or videos along to lines of:

"Future #Battlefield2042 maps from Season 2 onwards will only support 64 players. 128 player support is being retained but only for the launch and Season 1 maps."

We have an official update on this and the plans for the future of map and player size herehttps://twitter.com/T0TALfps/status/1534239058314113027

For any up and coming changes/updates/patches I would recommend keeping an eye on the following sources:

    Thanks!

@edgecrusherO0 You don't know what data they have nor what it may show so you can't say that 128 servers don't fill purely because of lack of players.

I found it increasingly difficult to find 128 Breakthrough (easier to rank up Rao) but had no problems finding 64 Breakthrough, anecdotally, that speaks volumes.

As to marketing, we can safely assume you support Specialists staying as they are, after all, that was how the game was marketed.....

@EA_Illium Can y'all reach out to Xbox Wire and some of the sites like IGN and request they update their articles? Because it's really confusing out there, and a CM post on Twitter is hardly an "official communication" that folks are going to notice.

Seriously, can CM's stop using their personal Twitter accounts for official/meaningful communication and post them in the forums or something?

@Trokey66 So...thanks for proving my point. You found it difficult to find players for 128p so went to 64p...like a lot of other folks generally did given the difficulty of finding 128p matches.

Metrics alone aren't going to say if that's because people prefer it or if people are doing what you;re doing and just playing whatever mode is active and they don't have to wait on matches for.

Metric-driven design is absolutely top tier smoothbrain garbage and has repeatedly been shown to be colossal failure. Metrics are important and can help inform decisions, but metrics are hardly the be-all-end-all.

@edgecrusherO0 It seems like the maps for Seasons 2-4 won't have 128 player versions, but they will still have C128 with the existing maps that support it. To me that is still abandoning 128 player maps.

@Adamonic It's probably for the best, the 128p layouts were nearly universal trash with way, way, way, way too much open/wasted space to begin with. At least it'll bring back some of the chaos we're missing out on from 128p breakthrough since DICE killed that entirely.

The season 1 developer video states 128 players is being dropped from breakthrough, but not conquest. So only conquest maps will have 128 players.

Thanks for clarifying. 128 players is a great idea, but it takes processing power. It feels like so much that made Battlefield great was removed from the game to make it a possibility.

Still hoping for an update that will bring me back to what will hopefully become a great game, but with what we know of season 1 so far, it won't, even though I own the season pass.

Fingers crossed for what is to come.

    @edgecrusherO0 What?

I had problems finding 128 Breakthrough but no problems with 64 Breakthrough yet this has nothing to do with 'the community' not wanting to play 128 Breakthrough because metrics are useless?

    Have I got that right?

Also, do you fully support Specialists as I asked?
  • I'd be happy to see 128p abondened. Especially if it means we see six more 64p maps rather than four more 128p maps.

Also I'm curious how they managed their internal map play testing. How much time was spent play testing the 128p maps vs 64p maps?  Simply rounding up 128p testers internally is probably no small feat.  For some areas on some maps I feel like there's no way it was play tested, I feel like I'm playing the initial draft.

@edgecrusherO0 They marketed it as 128p, but failed to deliver. Many of us already expect that there is connection between 128p and the lack of cover / concealment on the maps.

This happens when you design a game to not be a Battlefield game, and then need to make a Battlefield game out of what you got.

128p Breakthrough was great to get the Spots and Spot Assists to complete the tier assignments for specialists, but it wasn't a good mode on any of the launch maps.

And 64p Breakthrough makes it only a better mode than 64p or 128p Conquest on the BF2042 modes.

The only balanced modes are 64p Conquest on the BC2 and BF3 maps.

For me the game now enters Beta state. And I am not sure that BF2042 wants to be a Battlefield game after all.
  • Exactly right @kregora ,

EA may have marketed it as "BF2042" but what we have is not a real Battlefield game but instead a weird misfit and mashup of various genres...

Some arrogant execs may have labeled it as 'legacy features', but all that we are still missing is exactly what make a battlefield game a battlefield game.  We will see the verdict on the player count tomorrow when the season1 releases, but it will take substantial more than just superficial items and cosmetics to tease back the hundreds of thousands of players that have abandoned this game since Xmas.
