I wouldn't even choose one or the other. Put the specialists into the original class system with their own special gadgets, with a guaranteed class gadget (med pack, ammo pack, etc), but keep the ability for any class to choose any gun; the acceptation to this would be sniper rifles, which should be exclusive to Recon/Sniper class due to their drastically different playstyle. DMRs are fine because they function at mid range, but not so much long range.
This way would work the best because you'd still have unique specialists that they can still add in later in their battle pass as well as skins to monetize for those who want them, while also maintaining the cohesiveness of the original classes as well as the team play.

@Animal_Hysteria Some good thought here, but if I could take it a step further. Make the specialist faction specific, or at the very least a skin/uniform specific to each faction so we know “who’s on first”
- 4 years ago@Daffid When specialists were first announced, I thought that there was going to be faction specific specialists and a limit of one of those specialists per team.
(Seeing how they plan to have 12 on release and adding more throughout the game's lifecycle.)
It made sense to me as these specialists were limited and actually held up to the name of a specialist while others had their generic character and class specific loadout.
But seeing how anyone on either side can pick any specialist and weapon, that all has gone out of the window.
