I assumed most players did it but maybe not.
Unfortunately, I often find squad members oblivious to the spots and they still run into gun fire.
Related, I find exact spots more help such as "pinged an enemy soldier" rather than "pinged danger"
It's pretty hard to do on a joypad. The pointer is pretty jerky. I tend to lie around a lot due to keeping my sentry alive and I just observe what the enemies are up to which might help me if I can spawn back on the flag.

It doesn't have to be super precise...just enough to say "hey there's someone over this way"...
