Battlefield was and always will be a game where players need to work together. Bringing in Specialists killed this aspect of the game and broke natural balance of a Battlefield game - the class system.
I can argue that this isn't even a proper class system because there's still specialist gadgets and weapon options are completely open now when instead they should be locked to their specific classes.
This is the most open/liberal class system in the franchise and people are still complaining lol.
The Specialists are literally just skins. So instead of playing Assault as generic soldier (which would be cool), you can play as Dozer, Mackay, Sundance, or Zain. By selecting one of those, you get their Specialist gadget and trait, but that's it, that is the difference between previous class breakdowns and this one. You can still use any weapon now, which provides more flexibility than before.
The problem is this game was never intended to be a true BF title, it was BR or Hazard Zone with no more than 4 players (Quads). No need for factions, platoons, or CLASSES.
So we are where we are. If you want to use M5 or FXAA, you have to choose the skin that looks like Boris or Crawford, no biggie.

It's not more flexible, as the gadgets are restricted. As I said, before, Assault (why is Mackay assault anyway and not recon?? Isn't the ability to get to high vantage points perfect for recon?) can't carry ammo crates or proximity sensors, which is utterly rtdd, because why wouldn't they be able to have that? It's a lot more restricted than it was before, giving you less freedom and thus ruining the game for some of us. I don't like restrictions being imposed on a game that was fun when they first released it. Actually, it was almost perfect, when it came out.- RMEChief3 years agoLegend

The restrictions are just a specific Specialist gadget and trait can't have specific gadgets. That's it, that is the restriction.
I was not a fan of them going backwards and wasting dev time on things other than performance and new content. However, I understand why they did it.
If they didn't make this change now, and the next title reintroduced classes, that title would get as much of a bad reception as this title did. So to condition the player base and even the media, they brought classes back so the next title will be more well received as Back to Battlefield.

Exactly, and that's what's ruining the game for me Mackay was the perfect sniper for me with the right gadgets, take an ammo crate with you, go to a vantage point, spot for the team and pick off other snipers. Now I can choose between grenades that are useless to me, as I'm far away from the hot combat zones and other useless stuff. And if they're afraid going back to classes will get them a bad rep, then why do it?
They could've introduced this in a specific game mode for those who like it, but they shouldn't force that garbage on everybody.

IMO bringing the class system back is 100% a needed step and a vast improvement; I just wish they would have given us a real class system with weapon restrictions and no specialists and allow the Specialist crowd to play their own separate version of AOW. Of course we don't know player numbers so the current player numbers might not be able to support two versions of AOW.
- Psubond3 years agoLegend@ragnarok013 agreed, boris and crawford have bad specialist gadgets. if you want an FXM, javelin or M5 you basically give up 2 gadget slots to get them. lis doesn't have access to most of the gadgets for the class.
engineers got royally screwed and vehicles got buffed massively with this update.
at least give us the option to choose what launcher lis gets if we can only carry 1 - nukemetohell3 years agoRising Traveler

How is taking stuff away from players an improvement? How is forcing the players to play the game in a certain way an improvement?

The feedback about going back to being a Battlefield game in form, fit, and function has been met with overwhelming praise from the wider Battlefield community. Like it or not the majority of Battlefield players didn't like playing a Battlefield skinned Apex game and are very happy with this change. I do wish that DICE listened to the feedback I gave and kept a legacy Specialist version of AOW for guys like you while allowing the rest of us a Battlefield version of AOW to play to more fully satisfy both kinds of players.
