The 3.2 Update class system rework, while likely not a popular opinion, a complete disaster and unnecessary mistake.
Approximately ~14 months after the launch of the game, to completely derail the efforts of the player-base by, not only reworking the utility and capability of all the specialists, but to combine the disarray with a remap of controls and functions that folks have learned and been using to develop their skills on the battlefield,… pretty much a player population death sentence.
The game that was showcased by Free-to-Play weekends, resulting in people purchasing the game for what it was, as demonstrated by FTP, as launched and advertised,… no longer the same game. Bait and switch may seem harsh, but it is not an inaccurate description.
The Specialists we’re already identified in their respective class roles, if people weren’t playing them the way the devs intended, a hard reset is not the answer. Flat-out stripping away accessibility to certain gear and gadgets based on categorical class fit is not the key. Besides I’m guessing a lot of people choose the Specialist character based on appearance and Specialist Gear over whether they fit in a particular Squad Role slot. Let’s be realistic. There are just waaay too many Casper’s out there on the field not to believe that he isn’t being played for his ghille suit. And half of them never deploy his Recon Drone, so, well yeah.
If I have to relearn my controller config, as opposed to custom configuring it (but I still can’t decouple weapon change from weapon accessory change (hold),…the way it used to be,…mind you I’m on console,…
…well I might as well learn to play a different game all together.
I’m not a die-hard. I’m not a sweat twitcher. Of all the things that likely needed attention and change in the game, Class Restriction and new controller default layout really shouldn’t have been in the mix after a year. Better luck getting it right at launch next time around (Battlefield VI maybe something in 2027).
Finally, to add insult to injury, I can’t even connect to a match for this error or that error’s reason. Server stability has never been an issue before so I guess that is why it was never a priority over a class restriction rework.
Hazard Zone, arguably the best addition to game modes, isn’t even available as a Portal option and was hard enough to scrape together enough players before. Now it is all but deceased. Unless you are sitting in your 12-man chat group with everyone set up in 4-man pre-mades plotting who is extracting when and where with what. Just abusive for the pick-up gamer. So, I guess maybe that’s a good thing,… can’t get into a game anyway, so that makes for “an improved experience” for the solo player looking for a PUG. Prevents you from getting stressed out by the kill squads if you can’t play at all.
I recognize that my opinions are very highly likely a minutia minority and the sweats and fan boys will rush to defend the changes.
I’m not writing this for those people. I’m writing this as an expression of my disappointment under the premise that by some sheer accident someone from EA might read it, and deities forbid, potentially take it to heart.
Over and out.
- NazT553 years agoSeasoned Ace@SarcasticAvenger I am right there with you. Going to give it to at least S4 to see what happens. I bought the gold edition and I feel obligated to at least complete each season's battle pass.
- Psubond3 years agoLegend@SarcasticAvenger Well stated. I will give the game a few weeks (unless i burn out before that) and then i will likely be going down the same road as you, with BF franchise in my rear view mirror. Nothing but memories of what once was and no plans to find out where it is going

Was 2042 your first Battlefield game?
If that is the case, then I can understand your frustration for the classes.
But from the PoV of those who have associated some gameplay features as part of the Battlefield brand, this is a (very late) attempt to course correct.

Too late now, but they had a fairly easy way to do this.
They should've just added the class gadget, a class perk tied to gadgets, and a weapon proficiency for the class. So you could still play the same way you did before the patch if you wanted to, but, if you were "out" of class, you would not get any of the benefits of being "in" class.Examples:
Support class gets defib + ammo and med packs on a cooldown, but any other class that uses them would only get one (and would need to respawn or use an Angel's crate to reload them).
Engineer class gets repair gun + be equipped with extra M5 and/or FXAA storage and could hold 3 at a time, but any other class would only get one.
Class gadgets work better in class (faster/shorter cooldown) than gadgets used out of class.
So Sundance could still use M5, but would only get one. Mackay could use an ammo pack, but would only get one.
My thing is they only went halfway into classes anyway, so if they were going to just do that, then they could've done what I described above.
Tradeoff from previous titles = (+all weapons accessible + Specialist Gadget + Specialist Trait) = +3
Tradeoff from launch of BF2042 = (+Class gadget + Weapon Proficiency - access to specific gadgets) = +1

What this update has shown me is that Classes and Specialists don't mix. Simple as that.
It feels very forced and, after a year of loadout freedom, feels very restrictive. Of all the things the community has been crying out for, why did DICE prioritise this?
1) Server Browser
2) Persistent Servers with full rotation of maps, keeping players, squads and teams together over multiple rounds
3) Squad management tools and the ability for more than 4 friends to join a game
How many hundreds and hundreds of posts are there asking for these three fundamental BF game mechanics to be returned to the game? And instead we get an update that messes up a map, messes up controls, messes up loadouts and leaves players feeling like the last year of gaming has been for nothing.
DICE seem unable to stop themselves screwing this game up, over and over and over again. I can honestly say, since this game first launched, this is the closest I've come to calling it a day. I'll keep playing, and I'm sure I'll get used to the changes, but Christ, can DICE either add what we've been begging for since launch or just admit that they can't, or don't want to.

Referring to me? Was it because Novice tag forum or whining about 2042?
I played since BF4 when I finally could afford strong PC and comfortable internet, I left out BF3 because I played on peasantry console with dial up internet.
For years I've been through bad netcode BF4, horrible TTK BF1 and attrition in BFV, I can assure you I'll survive dreadful class in BF2042.

I am not sure myself who I was talking to. I think it was either towards the OP or someone whose post was deleted between my two posts
