The Specialists are literally just skins. So instead of playing Assault as generic soldier (which would be cool), you can play as Dozer, Mackay, Sundance, or Zain. By selecting one of those, you get their Specialist gadget and trait, but that's it, that is the difference between previous class breakdowns and this one. You can still use any weapon now, which provides more flexibility than before.
The problem is this game was never intended to be a true BF title, it was BR or Hazard Zone with no more than 4 players (Quads). No need for factions, platoons, or CLASSES.
So we are where we are. If you want to use M5 or FXAA, you have to choose the skin that looks like Boris or Crawford, no biggie.
They're not just skins, you still have the Specialists horrible gadgets to contend with. IMO bringing the class system back is 100% a needed step and a vast improvement; I just wish they would have given us a real class system with weapon restrictions and no specialists and allow the Specialist crowd to play their own separate version of AOW. Of course we don't know player numbers so the current player numbers might not be able to support two versions of AOW.
