@bevvoo With how flat the maps are, one can easily understand the decision to make thermals unable to see through smoke.
After using thermals for a good bit, I am of the opinion that the decision is indeed a good decision as it allows smokes to remain useful. It also gives thermals a proper purpose instead of being a be all and end all replacement for standard scopes. It's great for target identification but they're not so great for target engagement and that's perfect.
I am quite curious as to what raging fires you are talking about though.
The only thermal sight that can see through smoke is Casper's drone and I think this is intentional, however he cannot spot in smoke which is also intentional.

Since this thread was resurrected. Just want to echo that since June, smokes being able to work against thermals was a great decision balance wise.
