Thoughts on Battlefield 2042 and beyond
Disclaimer 1: This post was originally longer but some of it have been added to the game or getting improved now so it’s shorter. Nice!
Disclaimer 2: As my Battlefield experience is mainly around Battlefield 1 and V. (although I’m also play a good amount of 3 and 4) No doubt I based many things a lot from those games.
Disclaimer 3: I may not touch some of area that I’m not excel with. (like air vehicles)
Disclaimer 4: I may not mention some of the things as I think it’s in the good state or I’m currently satisfy with it. The overall tone of this post will likely be negative because I want developer to change or figure it out for the next game (or current game if it’s possible)
Gameplay
- I think having Ammo Station (and maybe Health Station) at an objective would be nice. Sometimes you can’t find Support or just want a definitive place to resupply. Also grenade only resupply there back in Battlefield V help reduce grenade spam.
- Would love to see the Squad Reinforcements return. Right now Squad doesn’t mean much for solo player.
- I prefer Battlefield V movement. I miss crouch running and combat roll. Maybe need to disable the crouch run when Dozer use a shield but overall what we used to have still “feeling” better than the Modern Warfare-inspired (same reason for other topics down in this post too) we have now.
- If there’s one thing I prefer from parachute over combat roll is the ability to jump from high place and then travel across the map with it. (assuming you don’t die first)
- We have to rely on glowstick and UI to identify teammates and enemies. Not an ideal situation for me. I like how we able to identify enemy and their class from silhouette back in Battlefield 1. I know it’s hard with customization system being monetization method but I think we can compromise and find a middle ground on this. At least add something on their back to make each class more distinct.
- With the return of 3D Spot and showing your location on minimap when firing, the game (or sometimes I find myself to) feel like the game being minimap/UI shooter. I get that we need to make suppressor attractive but I think Battlefield 1 take is/was better like the directional of enemy on minimap and hide the hit indicator when using suppressor.
- I like the ability to hold the crate and able to heal/resupply teammates without dropping it on the ground in Battlefield V. Not sure this is remove for balance reason or not.
- Ability to grab ammo/health from Support teammates. I don’t know why DICE is so afraid of taking good stuff from Hardline.
- I once suggest to have 5 classes in case DICE is so insist on having Engineer (Assault, Engineer, Medic, Support and Recon) but if we need to stick with 4 classes, I like what we have back in Battlefield 1 and V more (Assault, Medic, Support and Recon).
- While I like Battlefield V gunplay (except no horizontal recoil on category like Semi-Auto Rifles), this longer time to kill make it a bit more relax to play. Even if it lose the “punchy” feeling.
- I wish there’s more variants of maps like time of day or more dramatic weather effect. What we have right now look a bit more dull after playing a lot.
- Tornado really bring nothing to the game. It just there…or ruin some flow.
- The melee system. WHY. The previous one from Battlefield 1 and V is quick, brutal and satisfy. Now we have weaker one with flair animation that long enough for you to die before killing enemy. There’s no point for using other takedown than default because it’s the quickest one.
- Turn out I don’t use Plus System much. I usually stick to what I most comfortable with. Maybe with a bit of quick change one like grenade launcher but that’s it.
- Ammo count on some ammunition types are weird like 21 + 63 rounds for High-Power. I know that dev want to promote Plus System but at least the gun need to able to stand on their own without keep changing ammo.
- This game remind me how much I hate lift. You almost guarantee to die with that.
- We lack the amount of destruction. Sure we have the big one like Orbital rocket but it doesn’t provide much value to the game.
- I think lack of persistent server decrease the value of Squad system. Like when you find the right squadmates but game will send you back to matchmaking after the match end.
- I don’t like the meta of extended and drum magazine. There’s almost no point to not use it.
- I don’t like the Sector system in Conquest if you ask me, but later maps seems to throw that concept away too and I like it.
- Make Breakthrough great again. I mean can we bring back what make Operations so epic from Battlefield 1? like soundtrack that compliment with the match and situation, the storylines and multiple maps string together, the progression of the map as we going battalion after battalion, cutscene, intro, narrative, mission briefing, ending. All of these start to missing with Battlefield V’s Grand Operations and completely gone with 2042.
- Bring back Battle Pickup. It’s nice to see some unconventional weapon that doesn’t work as primary/sidearm/gadget.
- I think Battlefield benefits from dividing stuff for rock/paper/scissors mantra than blurring the line approach of 2042.
- I kinda miss Fortifications especially in Breakthrough. As my friend said it add more layer to the map and be a good counter with destruction that 2042 also lack.
- Bring back overheat so those bipod and extended mag LMG gang can stop.
- Would love to see the asymmetrical balance return.
- Cruise Missile on Spearhead’s Narrative Hunt is nice and I want to see more of it to set the mood of the game. Maybe when we march into final sector.
- Bring back locking weapons type to class
Vehicles
- I prefer more slower pace of vehicle gameplay from Battlefield V more. 2042 one rely too much on speed. (sometimes I called it Need for Speed)
- Vehicle call-in sound cool on paper but very inconvenient when actually use it. Prefer vehicle spawn on objective like we used to have in older titles. Sometimes you just want the transport one like LATV4 Recon and you need to call-in and wait. Also for balance reason as well.
- I prefer the self-repair system of vehicle on Battlefield 1/V rather the regeneration right now but some might say they won’t survive from helicopter and jet with that system.
- I prefer to have dedicate Tanker/Pilot class again for balance reason. (Screw the Rendezook or give them an option to carry launcher and repair tool)
- I prefer the upgrade tree for vehicles like Battlefield V rather than “pick what’s best in the game right now” system in 2042.
- Where is stationary weapons?
UI and Features
- I like the minimal UI of the Battlefield 1/V more but that’s just my preference.
- Main menu of Battlefield 1 is way better and more beautiful.
- Server Browser. I think we all know the reason. Really ruin the mood when you jump in and spend the time loading only to end up in empty room for that gamemode. It’s also more convenient in non-peak time like late night to check is there an active server or not.
- The “megamap” is too big, it take an entire screen.
- No Spectator mode. RIP to all those cool screenshot. Kinda ironic when we have a screenshot contest held by EA/DICE but people need to find another way around to get a good one rather than official tools.
- I prefer to have tickets and gamemode related elements to be on the center and top of the screen like how it was in Battlefield 1/V. It’s the core of the mode. You will win or lose depend on this so I don’t know why we downgrade to be on top of minimap like Battlefield 4.
- We have lost some good amount of quality of life features in this game. At least one I can think of is health indicator when you want to spawn on your squad or vehicles. Right now we only have a message that the vehicle is low on health while we have a clearly better one back in Battlefield V.
- Personally, I like the 3-piece character customization and the rarity of post-Pacific Battlefield V more. It provide more creativity, opportunity and combo more.
- For vehicle appearance customization, I like what we have back in Battlefield V that you can put the flag or leaf/camo on any skin. In 2042 if you need the one with foliage, you need to use that skin only which sometimes don’t suit the terrain of the map. Not to mention the foliage color dynamically change based on vehicle skin back in Battlefield V too! That was awesome and provide more value when you need to spend money on.
- Lack of grind currency. If you ask me some of the cosmetic (like the rare stuff) should be available with something like Company Coins.
- Ability to create a loadout/preset for cosmetic so we can quickly change the skin based on terrain. (like Snow, Jungle, Desert)
Performance
- I don’t know why my game crash a lot. At least once per session and for some reason the visual in 2042 with all low setting kinda worse than Battlefield V’s all low for me so. In short, the performance is not great to me.
- Ever since moving from Origin to EA app, we lost the ability to track FPS while playing. Would be nice if we have in-game performance tracker at the corner of the screen like Overwatch.
Battlefield Portal
- Portal has potential but the XP farming thing steal all the attention on both player and developer at launch. It’s also sad to see how little content update they got. Especially after knowing some folks who have passion on it. I wish to see Portal on steroid in the next game.
- The quality like animations for some 1942 weapons look like a downgrade from Battlefield V. Thought 1942 Portal will scratch my itch and make me move on from Battlefield V. (Spoiler: It’s not.)
- Make the Portal as a separate experience seems to be a mistake. It’s Firestorm and 5v5 situation again where many stuff is not available in the main game and sink in there.
Community and Live Service
- I don’t know why we can’t have roadmap until very late cycle. (like Season 7 iirc)
- CTE. We need it. I know we have the tech to make a balance pass on something on the fly but I would rather try it in test environment first before leaving broken stuff slip to retail. Also to test some of major stuff like the visual recoil update or when making other controversial change like time to kill. If we have a test server back in Battlefield V, I’m sure the momentum after Pacific Update will continue.
- As Jaqub Ajmal once said “Fill in the survey!”, I think we should have feedback survey along with the CTE.
- An actual commitment to live service, hate seeing the strategy of “1 year and if it’s not highly popular, we move to next project and charge you for the money again”.
- Wouldn’t it be nice if we can buy old Battle Pass like Halo or Super Animal Royale? Still only one active at a time but less FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) for all of us.
- I think how Plus System work made us get less weapons. I actually prefer to have more gun.
- I think late cycle of 2042 having weird emphasize on infantry only.
- I don’t know why but I think when the team shift the focus from Conquest 128 to Conquest 64, the map look more detailed.
