Yep, got to agree with that, I probably sunk more time into BF2 and BF2142 each than any BF game since.
@Ironhead841Same here. My playtime has decreased for each BF game that has come since.
My funniest memory was when me and my friends were playing on the map MASHTUUR CITY and we were assaulting one of the flags and I looked up and a destroyed transport chopper was falling out of the sky and landed right on top of one of my friend's head. We laughed so hard at that and my friend was like WTF?

Specialists were a step forward, classes were two steps back. Dice has less to listen to those they listen to.
An outdated class system from the past is one big folly.

The fact that this game face-planted and players abandoned it in droves almost immediately after launch would indicate that specialists are in fact NOT the way forward.
If EA/Dice learns any lessons from BF2042, I would hope that the next Battlefield stays closer to the roots of the franchise.
- RaginSam2 years agoSeasoned Ace@Ironhead841 To be fair, I don’t think Specialist are what drove people away. The game was successful with its sales. The player drop off was massive, and a huge part of that was the performance. The average hardware according to Steam surveys shows that most people would struggle to play before the game became way more optimized. I had a 1070 system during the launch of the game, and it sucked. I could run any other game just fine with low settings.

Respectfully that's revisionist fantasy, while performance issues surely played a part (as well as lack of weapons, maps, so-called "legacy" features etc. etc.), the vast majority of displeasure voiced about BF2042 at launch revolved around the heroes and their abilities.

@Ironhead841LOL, well then, Respectfully those are facts that I stated. The game ran horrible for myself and for some of my friends. If you can’t play the game, then you’re not going to stick around. It’s one part of what hurt the game at launch. You can see the statistics of the most used hardware on Steam.
Do you have any sort of data or statistics to back up the claim that the majority of players had a problem with the lack of classes?I would argue that between really bad performance and the lack of content played a bigger role then the absence of classes.

I'm not saying that all of that DIDN'T play a part but from a lot of what I saw on these forums, Redditt, Twitter as well as customers' reviews at launch, specialists weren't being warmly received by the Battlefield community at large.
Classes, love them or hate them, are a foundational core feature of a Battlefield title.
EA/Dice's experiment with specialists failed, that is why they are trying to shoehorn classes back into this game NOW.
I don't agree with that decision this late in this game's life cycle but that is WHY they are doing it.
- ATFGunr2 years agoLegend@RaginSam To be fair, the game sold ok because people thought it was going to be a Battlefield game. I don’t think anyone expected a hero shooter with shades of Tarkov and PubG. I hated the specialists when the game came out. I’d wanted a Battlefield game. All my clan mates wanted a battlefield game. What we got was a solo hero shooter with no thought given to thousands of players who played together. It was bad enough back in the day when Origin started restricting us to 100 friends, or to a platoon of 50. Now we get 3 people to play with. The missing server browser and persistent servers is the biggest reason this game is dead. After 900 hours in it, they bring classes back? Huge mistake. I said it before, if classes came out in the first few months, it might have worked. We all are used to the game the old way. I agree with you that the performance was dog *. If the game was battlefield with specialists, I think people would have eventually come around. The strong dislike of specialists was drowned out with all the other bad design and execution. Dice has dug an incredibly deep hole of anger and frustration with 2042, I’ve played since 1942 (so 20 years) and I love the BF series. I play other games, but always came back to BF. Trying to combine classes with specialist is stupid. I’m not going to sugarcoat it, it’s idiotic. It’s typical Dice. Stop listening to the streamers, and listen to the players damn it. The smug devs need to get off their high horse and realize how badly they judged the community. They’re still misjudging. They still think they know what we want. It’s pretty goldarned clear they don’t by looking at the player count. We played a few times, remember when we couldn’t get a Breakthrough going and it was only 9PM PST? That’s telling man. It tells us that 2042 is a failure as a BF. After a year it’s finally an ok game, but it’s still not Battlefield. Classes deserve to be in the next game, if they make one. They’re the wrong move at this point in time for 2042.
